Humpday hello....and goodbye to November!

Humpday hello, greetings and salutations to my Guiltily Indulgent posse! Can you believe we have hit that point of no return: Winter, year end, holiday joys/woes...the whole hot mess! Quite frankly, I am ready to see what 2012 has in store - besides some long awaited books, movies and yet another end of the world debacle looming...At least those Aztecs predicting the end of the world were hotties - loin cloths and jaguars rock, not to mention, the whole discovery of chocolate - booya! Speaking of tasty treats - enjoy this one, I know I will......

This past weekend was book club and not only did I get to chose the book, I got to host the shindig! I love my good friends, good books and good food and wine! Throw in a couple episodes of Game of Thrones and you have a winner! (seriously HBO, are you making any series that doesn't sport some serious nudity/sex/kink with a side of hot men???) Having heard from a couple others about this series that so excited me, I'll give you my take and then lead on a bit.

Harlequin Nocture, the paranormal line of Harlequin Romance, gathered together four of today's hottest paranormal romance writers and gave them a premise: an evil sorcerer has taken over the land, killed the king and queen and their four children have been scattered in the hope that one day they will reunite and overthrow the evil that has invaded their land.

Gena Showalter, Jill Monroe, Jessica Anderson and Nalini Singh all take on the task of telling the story of one of the royal heirs fates. I was so excited by this cast of writers and the (forgive the nerd alert) concept of four writers with one task, each writing in their own voice, to tell the tale that that character spoke to them. It was a huge risk and sounds alot like a college writing assignment but it works phenomenally well!

Lord of the Vampires, Gena Showalter, Harlequin Nocturn, August 2011

Unfolding the tale of Nicholai, the eldest heir, the "Dark Seducer", must woe a woman from another land to save him from his imprisonment. Jane Parker, convalescing in her cabin after a nearly fatal car accident, seems an unlikely heroine for this fairy tale prince. Her strength, loyalty and love are as emotionally moving as her will to survive. Their chemistry rocketed off the page. Oh to be trapped in a cabin in Oklahoma....with him! I enjoyed the fantasy elements but was thrown off at points with the back and forth between worlds. You have to appreciate the dark edgy humor that Showalter's fans adore. Hers is a sexy story, her alpha slightly tainted but redeemable and her heroine humble and bringing sexy back to the brainy girls team!! Definitely a five chocolate covered strawberry read.

Lord of Rage, Jill Monroe, Harlequin Nocturn, September 2011

Anyone who can incorporate a Goldilocks beginning, a Princess bride middle and a berserker has to be ace in my book! Lord of Rage tells the tale of Princess Brenna, ripped from her realm in Eldon by her parents dying magic, lands in the nameless woods only to stumble upon a cabin, eat and drink, collapse and chair and fall asleep in a giant bed....of a berserker who arrives home with his two younger brothers after chores one morning. The push-pull attraction the two hold for one another will suck the reader in immediately. Elements of magic, hearkening to another time and place make the story fantastical and yet timeless. Brenna must win over the cantankerous Osborn, figure out how to battle the evil that has found her and find her way back to her own realm. The wit and sexual tension are in perfect balance and make for a total page turner. The best part lies in the fact that Brenna whose background story is known somewhat to readers who started with Showalter's first installment, are expounded upon and cleverly reshaped by Monroe's skillful crafting. One doesn't take away from the other but builds upon it, making the series as a whole a true group effort, even in the individual stories.

Book one was great but Book two is outstanding - book three is out (and amazing) and book four releases on ebook tomorrow.....woohoo! I give Lord of Rage a mighty five chocolate covered strawberries....bring on the final battle!

Lordy Lordy

Hello all, I feel like I am still in a triptophan coma, but Christmas shopping is slowly pulling me out of it. I didn't do a lot of Black Friday shopping but I did do a little damage on Cyber Monday. The next three weeks are going to be crazy busy but I thik we all experience that this time of year.

November's book club book was Lord of the Vampires by Gena Showalter. It is the first in the Royal House of Shadows series where each book is written by a different author. So sit back and let me tell you about Nicolai and Jane.

Lord of the Vampires, Gena Showalter, Harlequin Nocturne
Once upon a time…the Blood Sorcerer vanquished the kingdom of Elden. To save their children, the queen scattered them to safety and the king filled them with a need for vengeance. Only a magical timepiece connects the four royal heirs…and time is running out.
Nicolai the Vampire is renowned for his virility, but in a cruel twist of fate “The Dark Seducer” has become a sex slave in the kingdom of Delfina—stripped of his precious timepiece and his memory. All that remains is a primal need for freedom, revenge—and the only woman who can help him.
When the wanton vampire summons Jane Parker, she is helpless to obey. She's drawn to his dark sexuality and into his magical realm. But for this human, all is not a fairy tale. For saving Nicolai could mean losing the only man she's ever craved...

Jane was a scientist until a drunk driver took the life of her family and left her struggling to regain not just her life but the use of her legs. She has been experiencing dreams of a man chained up and being held against his will. When Jane receives a book in the mail it seems to have been written about her dream man and he is asking for her help. She doesn't know why she thinks this, she just does. Jane falls asleep reading the book and wakes up in another time and place… in Delfina, as Princess Odette. Jane of course having no clue how this has happened is glad to find that her dream man is in fact real and his name is Nicolai.

Nicolai has been kept as a sex slave in the kingdom of Delfina. His memory lost, he remembers nothing but his own name. He just feels this constant need for vengeance. Nicolai’s only hope of escape is the mysterious woman who appears in his cell, unseen to all others but him. Bringing her to this magical realm, he must earn Jane’s trust to gain her assistance and then escape the sadistic princess who has imprisoned him.

But even if Nicolai can convince Jane to help him he still has to find a way to retrieve his lost memories and find his way home.

The beginning is a little hard to get into, but once you do, it is hard to put down. It's a very unique twist to the fairy tale story that we all grew up with. The story line is packed with action and some truly great villians that will have you cheering for their destruction.

One of my favorite things about this book is Jane. She is a strong, smart heroine who you couldn't help but root for. Nicolai is a great alpha hero, he is strong and powerful and his drive to protect Jane is one that almost all little girls dream of finding in their prince one day.

I found Lord of the Vampires to be a strong beginning to the Royal House of Shadows series and I am intrigued to see what direction the other three authors take the storyline and the siblings to defeat the Blood Sorcerer and take back their kingdom. I give Lord of the Vampires 4 chocolate dipped strawberries.

Lord of the Vampires - Royal House of Shadows, Gena Showalter

The Royal House of Shadows is a series of four books with Gena Showalter, Jill Monroe, Jessica Andersen, and Nalini Singh each taking on one of the stories. The stories take place a world where vampires, blood magic, shape-shifters and Berserkers all exist together, with each story written as a modern twist on favorite fairy tales. From Alice in Wonderland, to Goldilocks and the Three Bears, to Little Red Riding Hood and Beauty and the Beast, they explore alpha males in all their (sexy) glory as four royal siblings finally discover the power of true love.

The First in the series, Lord of the Vampires, takes on Alice in Wonderland. Jane is an intelligent scientist who has recently been in a car accident and has lost it all. Her family, her will to live, her will to date, her will to do more than exist – except in her dreams where she always sees her mysterious sexy Vampire, Nickoli. Or is it a dream? One morning she finds a book on her porch written by her mystery man asking for her to come save him. Upon reading the book, she is transported through the metaphorical “rabbit hole” and is drawn into Nickoli’s world. Once in Delfina, the land of the Queen of Hearts, all is not what it seems for either Nicolai or Jane and fate still has not played its hand. Nicolai is a sex slave in the kingdom and has no idea of how he got there since his memory and magical powers have been taken from him. Nor does he fully remember who Jane is or why he knew to summon her. Only that he used his magic to do so and she is to be his savior. His one and only desire has been for vengeance. That’s all he has wanted in this land where time moves slower then normal - vengeance against his current captors and vengeance against the Blood Sorcerer of the neighboring land of Elden. Although as for the later he doesn’t know why he would care what goes on in Elden. And Jane is the key...but exploiting her would mean dooming the only mortal he has ever craved. And since seeing her in person the word “crave” doesn’t begin to cover his feelings.

Paradox Theory – unless she had come here before and returned home to a time before they’d met and her dreams were echoes of what was to be how would he have known to summon her? Will they ever find out? Why don’t they remember more of each other? And how will the other person take learning about what they can remember? Is Vengeance worth more then love? Fate. There cannot be light without shadows. Through battles and hard won trust the couple finds their way. They both learn that if they had not gone through dark times and uncertainties that they would not triumph in the end.

Although this story in loosely based on Alice in Wonderland or rather inspired by, it is uniquely it’s own story. The twist on the classic adds a nice backdrop for the story but the adventure was unique and fresh. Nickoli is an ever-evolving character making the adventure rich and exciting. His latent powers emerge as he breaks free from all the physical and mental cages that have been placed on him making him a truly mesmerizing male. And he is all male, with the occasional reverting back to “Alpha” mode when Jane’s in danger which is both sexy and somewhat comical with his almost Yoda style of speech. All in all this is a fun ride. The world is rich of textures and characters and a nice start to the series. The next characters are built up nicely and it will be nice to learn about them and see how the series involves. I give this one four double-dipped chocolate covered strawberries!

SEAL of my Dreams

SEAL of my Dreams is an anthology chock full of short stories that will have you laughing, crying and smiling. All proceeds from sales of this book go to the Veterans Research Corporation, a non-profit veterans’ medical research foundation. And it’s amazingly hot cover is a real SEAL – doesn’t that make him even more gorgeous? But that’s not all that’s good about this book. The eighteen authors have captured the essence of the military hero with their passion for honor and duty, their courage and strength.

Though each hero in this anthology is a Navy SEAL, the stories (and the heroes) are uniquely their own. Some stories are full of suspense – high energy reads – while still others are more romantic – proving that even the toughest men have big hearts.

It was hit or miss for me on the stories though I did enjoy all of them to some extent; there were some that were far better than others. Standouts include Coming Home by Jami Alden, Going Dark by HelenKay Dimon, Twenty-One Hours by Alison Kent, Signed, SEALed, Delivered I’m Yours by Christine Ridgway, and Holding On by Stephanie Tyler. But don’t skip around because they are all definitely worth the read if you are the least bit patriotic, love a man in uniform and are a romantic at heart.

RATING: 4 Chocolate-dipped Strawberries

Learning To Trust: A Good Thing

Molto Bene! Learning To Trust by Lynne Connolly was so much more than a traditional romance. With its emotional storyline and darker theme dealing with the struggles of addiction, the book will appeal to more than your average romance reader.  And a lover of all things Italian… landscape, architecture, men, gelato… the setting of this book also enchanted to me.

Bellina Mazzanti Forde, or Lina Forde as she is now known, lived once as a socialite in NYC where money bought her anything she wanted, including drugs. On impulse, Lina and her then-boyfriend Byron Brantley decide to cut all ties with their lives and take off.  Both are heavily addicted to drugs and will do anything for their next fix until Lina was struck by a car. Having no family and friends to help her after the car accident, the nuns in Rome take her in, clean her up and care for her. Only Byron isn't ready to get clean so he leaves her. Fast-forward two years when Byron’s brother Jonathon gets a tip in his search for Byron and friend Lina. Jonathon flies to Italy to rescue his brother and take him home only to find out Lina no longer knows where Byron is. When they find Byron a few days later in the morgue, dead from a heroin overdose, suspicions arise because it's pure grade heroin in Byron's system. While both trying to discover who set Byron up, they’re forced back to NYC where family secrets are revealed and Lina discovers she’s been deceived by someone she trusted.

Engaging readers with real-life issues in a format that also weaves in a beautiful romance is a talent. Connolly clearly has this talent. I was struck by the poignant story of Lina’s recovery though I did wonder if those affected by addiction might have been challenged in reading this book. The cold-hearted stance Jonathan took on his brother’s death chilled me. Since he was portrayed to care for Lina so deeply, this incongruity was that much harsher. But clearly one of the messages in this book is that there is only so much a loved one can do to help an addict - a sad message for a romance novel actually but one well-written.

Connolly’s straight-forward writing style made the story fly by though it isn't a light read, the story progresses at an even pace while the reader experiences the journey along with Jonathan and Lina. Readers will find it impossible not to care for the characters in Learning To Trust.

RATING: 5 chocolate-dipped strawberries

Thanks to Netgalley for providing this book for my review on behalf of Carina Press.

The Wolf Within - Sondrae Bennett

After reading this book you will never watch Twilight again. The Wolf Within takes the quintessential high school crush to new levels. Brendan and Julie have been in each others lives since they were children. Brendan having lost his full families support at an early age was taken in by Julie’s family as a welcome guest at the table whenever possible. However, Brendan is closer in age to Julie’s sister and therefore a good friend and classmate to Laurie. This significant age gap forced Brendan, regardless of his mating urges and infatuation for Julie, to keep his distance not to mention her three huge brothers standing watch. This subsequently caused Julie to misread why he and Laurie are close and why he is always “around” the house so much. Forcing her to run away to college to try to get him out of her system.

Once again, Ms. Bennett captures the subtleties that really make a relationship work. She manages to tell a story of pure romance and charm as the couple begins to explore what is between them upon Julie returning from college. Julie is first introduced in Arctic Winds. But it is in this book that the depth of her feelings of being fully human in a mostly shifter, everyone except her dad, family and town are explored. Brendan shows her that shifting isn’t what makes someone unique or special but it is who you are that counts. Though Julie refuses to see the truth for fear of rejection, Brendan persists and the issuing courtship is one for the fairy tale books. He is ever gentle, patient and persistent is forcing her to see both how precious she is and how precious what they feel for each other is.

The book brings back more of her family characters since she has returned home. Both couples from the previous two books along with her sister play a role in the story line. The plot has a nice twist bringing in some pack politics with neighboring shifter packs providing a bit of drama to keep things exciting and adding interest to see what will come next both for the couple and for future books. This is another great short story for Ms. Bennett and perfect for a quick afternoon read on a snowy day.

I give this one four chocolate dipped strawberries!

Chasing Paradise

Chasing Paradise by Sondrae Bennett
He’ll do whatever it takes to earn back her trust.
A vacation is exactly what Ethan needs to escape the mate hungry females in his pack. Determined to have fun, he can’t think of a better way to start than sampling all the different flavors the shifter only resort has to offer, and not the food variety. But after he meets Gwen, no one else holds any interest for him. Ethan came on vacation to avoid mating. There’s no way he’s going to give up his freedom without a fight.
Gwen is devastated when she hears her mate denying everything they are to each other. She can’t sit by, watching him fool around with other girls at the resort. Or worse, crawl back, unable to resist the mating pull but not really wanting her. She needs to get away and her own vacation sounds like the perfect plan. But she should have remembered what her mother always taught her, never run from a predator unless you want them to chase you. The hunt is on…

You can never have enough of shifter men, especially the strong alpha wolf variety. After reading the first in the Alpine Woods Shifter series I was ready to dive into Chasing Paradise. At first I have to say that I really didn’t enjoy the story. It really wasn’t the story as much as you like Gwen right off the bat and since Ethan was the cause of her distress you just didn’t want to like him. I am glad that he pursued her and was determined to make it right but it was going to take more than a short story for me to like him. In looking back on it, I can see that it is actually a great story that reminds us that words can hurt just as much as a physical blow. It can also cause you to lose the chance you have at true happiness but not thinking before you acting. I would give Chasing Paradise 3 ½ chocolate dipped strawberries!

Chasing Paradise....all the way to Humpday!

Due to a glitch in the old brain computer (and a simple misunderstanding with google calendar) this blog is posting a wee bit late. But, as I always say and firmly believe....better late than never. I'd like to regale you with tales of Thanksgiving revelry and such, but honestly, it was the humpday from hell, sandwiched between a day off (yes yay but after working the entire weekend, no, not really....14 loads of laundry can NOT be tackled in one day) and Thanksgiving....blessedly cooking AND leftover free thanks to out of towners who chose buffet over me cleaning/cooking for the masses (no not reflection on my cooking, just large group with added guests who were kindly not imposing - I got goooooood friends!) Anyhoodle - needless to say, I am extremely thankful about that! Now, to share, a little Thanksgiving side dish....or just dishiness in general! Mmmmmm. (Will save room for pie, right?)

Our spotlight author, Sondrae Bennett, was a new one to me this week and, while a bit delayed in the reading, was by no means unenjoyed. I am not normally a warm and fuzzy with the first book in any series and I am tenative about my shifter series - they either have to be seriously funny or seriously steamy....most things in between leave me a bit flat. Not so with this series - and once I started, it was like a bag of halloween candy - couldn't stop til all available enstallments were devoured. So, having read Artic Winds, which was a really captivating kickoff to this new shifter series, I loved Jason and Samantha and was totally ready to see what was in store for middle brother Ethan....

Chasing Paradise, Sondrae Bennett, Lyrical Press, July 2011

He'll do whatever it takes to earn back her trust.

A vacation is exactly what Ethan needs to escape the mate hungry females in his pack. Determined to have fun, he can't think of a better way to start than sampling all the different flavors the shifter only resort has to offer, and not the food variety. But after he meets Gwen, no one else holds any interest for him. Ethan came on vacation to avoid mating. There's no way he's going to give up his freedom without a fight.

But she should have remembered what her mother always taught her, never run from a predator unless you want them to chase you. The hunt is on...

Chasing Paradise, the second in the Alpine Woods Shifters series, delivers more alpha males, more delightful heroines and the complete debacles that precede a happily ever after. Some things that Ms. Bennett does well: I loved just the right bit of dangling intro left to readers at the end of book one - made the anticipating of book 2 so much sweeter. I loved that the heroine of this story, Gwen, was an otter and that though she was small of stature and gawky on land, she was smart and business savvy and sleekly confident in her animal form. I loved the imperfection of the alpha male, fleeing from potential mate-dom, finding his dream mate on vacation and then putting his foot so firmly in his mouth that he nearly blows his own HEA. And I really loved that he figured out begging is wasted air and that actions speak louder than words.

This second installment was very well done and I felt it actually delved deeper into the psychological motivations of male/female relationship dynamics. Women place signficant value on sex - especially great sex. And men say really stupid crap when they get scared. It was interesting to see the relationship unfold from multiple perspectives and the secondary characters remained quite secondary - they were strong but not overpowering, their interference appropriate and the outcome was splendid. Watching the family give advice to the most skittish of the three alpha males was hilarious. The female bonding, a carry over from book 1, also caused a few snorts of laughter. There was a good amount of sexual tension, some tears over the pain caused by a misunderstanding and the fears of taking that leap of faith when you fall in love, and when they do come together, the chemistry sizzles on the page!

Some may feel things move quickly in these stories, keep in mind they are novellas and under 100 pages (or 200 for some reason on my Nook Color - maybe cause I blow the font up to stave off getting bifocals?) so how slow can they afford to go??? All in all, I felt like this series is worth a read - I really enjoyed the third story, The Wolf Within, which relates the love story of the brother's fully human sister, Julie, upon her graduation from college and return to their Colorado shifter town.

I give Chasing Paradise a tasty four chocolate dipped strawberries, a silky otter pelt and a happy Thanksgiving to all!

The Dry Spell Is Broken!

Whew am I glad that's over! LOL I hate when I go through those dry spells where I just can't seem to get into anything. Our feature author this week was a big help in getting me through the dark days. Now I am really looking forward to having some down time this week with the Thanksgiving holiday. I have some books in my TBR pile that have just been waiting for me to read them and I am hoping to cut a wide swath through them over the long weekend. I am sure I will probably do just a tad bit of shopping at some point this weekend too. It would be great if I could just bust it all out and be done with it. I love to buy things for people but I really hate dealing with the crowds this time of year.

Speaking of presents, I got one of my own in a new to me author. Sondrae Bennett is our feature author this week and we are reviewing her Alpine Woods Shifters series and after reading the first two books I have to say I am hooked on the Callahan Clan.

Arctic Winds, Sondrae Bennett, Lyrical Press
Nothing will stop a wolf once he’s found his mate…not even her own doubts.
After her skulk abandoned her four years ago, Samantha knew she would never truly be
wanted. When she accidentally stumbles into a wolf town and is asked by their premier to stay, she believes it’s the novelty of an arctic fox motivating him. She knows she’ll be on her own again once he tires of her.
Jason finds himself pulled to Samantha from the moment she faints in his arms. His wolf is calling to him, telling him he’s found their mate and the heat he feels for Samantha is impossible to resist. But his little fox is loaded down with emotional baggage and doesn’t believe she’s worthy of love. Can he overcome her fears? Or will pack jealousies and the local foxes convince her she doesn’t belong with him before he has a chance?

Ms. Bennett has begun this series with a solid foundation. Great character development and world building in a short story is not always easy to do but this is one that gets it right. I liked the way that the relationship builds not only between Jason and Samantha but between Samantha and his family. There is a nice balance of humor in the story so it doesn't feel bogged down in drama. And the sex scenes are scorching hot. Strong secondary character's have me looking forward to more stories set in this fresh, exciting, erotic world. So give yourself a present and settle down with some sexy shifters. I give Arctic Wind 4 chocolate dipped strawberries!!

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!!

WELCOME Author Sondrae Bennett!

Guilty Indulgence welcomes author Sondrae Bennett on the eve of the release of her next book in the Alpine Woods Shifters series. This week, you will see reviews of her first two books and have the chance to WIN a FREE BOOK (contest details below). But first, enjoy a quick post with Sondrae along with an excerpt from The Wolf Within.

From the moment I introduced Julie at the end of Arctic Winds, book one in my Alpine Woods Shifters, I knew her story was going to be special. I couldn’t wait to get started. The result more than lived up to my expectations.

Due to a twist of genetics, Julie is born full human despite the fact that her mother and four siblings are all alpha wolf shifters. It results in many problems growing up, eventually compelling her to leave her family and home to go away for college. When she returns, she’s ready to accept her place as an outsider, but not everyone sees her that way. Despite the obstacles stacked against them, Brendan pursues Julie with an unwavering determination. He sets out to prove how perfect they could be together.

All of us can in some way relate to feeling like an outsider, whether warranted or not. Find out how Julie handles and overcomes her feeling in The Wolf Within, out today from Lyrical Press!

Brendan's waited years for Julie's return. Now that she’s finally home, there’s nothing to keep him from her...not even her three alpha wolf brothers. But he’s not the only one after Julie. Something is stalking her and Brendan's protective instincts toward her kick in.

THE WOLF WITHIN Excerpt:
After waiting almost a full minute for her to notice him, Brendan coughed into his hand to get her attention. She jumped at the noise, dropping a book on her bare foot.

“Oh jeez. Are you okay?” Cursing himself for startling her, Brendan rushed over. He placed his hands on her waist as he bent down to look at her foot.

His heart skipped a beat when she wrinkled her nose and smiled. “Relax, Brendan. It’s just a paperback. It couldn’t have weighed more than half a pound.” The laughter in her eyes mesmerized. This was the teasing, happy Julie he remembered.

“Well, at least let me kiss it and make it better.” Brendan rose and brushed his lips against hers. A spark of recognition shot through him. As if his soul recognized the other half of himself. He could only hope she experienced it too. If she felt even half the desperate need he did, there would be no way she could deny him. Her hands flew to his chest, wrapping his t-shirt inside her fists. It was all the urging he needed.

Brendan pulled her body against his as his mouth ravished her. He stroked his hand down her spine, his other arm supporting as he leaned over her.

Her taste exploded inside his head, sending shockwaves through his system. It had been a long wait for this kiss, too long. He ran his tongue around her lips, savoring the moan that escaped her. Taking the bottom lip between his teeth, he felt her hands pull him closer as he gently bit down. Definitely worth the wait.

Kissing Julie was everything he’d envisioned and more. It was so easy to lose himself in her, forgetting everything but the woman in his arms. Julie. Desperate to feel her curves pressing against him, he pulled her closer.

Her moan swept against his mouth, kindling the fire inside him as her tongue tangled with his. Her naked desire triggered the primal beast inside, and the dull sting in his gums indicated his canines had extended. When he opened his eyes, he saw the distorted colors in the world around him, a sure sign they had changed to his wolf’s.

It was almost painful for him to retreat, but this wasn’t the way he wanted things. He would not let his wolf rule this situation. Even more than that, he didn’t want to frighten her. The memory of Julie backing away from him in fear would haunt him for a long time. He never wanted to frighten her again.

Closing his eyes, Brendan placed a quick kiss against the corner of her mouth and raised his head.

Julie remained mute but didn’t pull away. The silence lengthened until Brendan opened his eyes and gazed into her quizzical hazel ones.

“You missed,” she whispered. He stared at her, puzzling through her words. What was she talking about? And then it hit him. He’d told her he was going to kiss her injured foot and make it better. The end of his lips curved up in a smile.

“I did? My bad. I could always try again…” he trailed off, pulling her tighter against him. But Julie had other plans. With a stream of laughter, she pulled out of his embrace.

“Oh no. That’s quite all right.” She turned away from him, but didn’t get far before turning back, her eyes pleading with him. In that moment, he would have ripped off his arm and given it to her had she asked it of him.

Arctic Winds, Alpine Woods Shifters Book One

Is there still tenderness in the world? How about courtship? Or unconditional acceptance? Yes, yes there is. Arctic Winds is a tender, well-written short showing us that there still are chivalrous men and loving communities out there. The heroine, Samantha, comes from the worst of circumstances as an orphan who is forced from her community by her extended family. After being on the run for 4 years she arrives in the Colorado town of Alpine Woods where the story begins, along with her future. Unlike any community she has ever experienced before she is embraced and welcomed. She learns that although she is a Arctic Fox and the town is comprised of wolves and humans it still feels like home. This feeling has a great dealt to do with the gentleman/primale wolf, Jason. Although he has all the Alpha Wolf mating demands that are so clique in other stories he doesn't act on them. Instead he courts her like a true gentlemen. Jason's tenderness and courting of Samantha is a refreshing change to the other dominant Alpha Male characters out there in the paranormal romance genre. This short story focuses on this charming couple starting their future. Since it is only 76 pages there isn't a much more complexity to the plot beyond the love story. However, Ms. Bennett does introduce the reader to a quiet a few characters and gives a look into some of the issues the town is facing. This helps to suggest interesting future story lines. This is a nice story but keep in mind that it is a short, short story and therefore doesn't have the time or length needed to develop a more complex plot. For the length that it is, the story is well written and a charming quick read. Perfect for a cold winter afternoon. I give it 4 chocolate dipped strawberries and a mug of hot cocoa!

Four Of Hearts

Welcome, Roz Lee.

Thanks so much for inviting me over to Guilty Indulgences today! I love the title! In honor of guilty indulgences, I thought I’d share something about my guilty indulgence – chocolate.

My Love Affair with Chocolate

I’ve had an ongoing affair with chocolate for most of my life. It began with those famous milk chocolate bars in the brown wrapper. They were such a treat when I was a kid. I can still remember rationing them out by breaking off one little block at a time, letting the creamy goodness melt slowly in my mouth so I wouldn’t miss a single luscious second of its goodness.

One of my favorite childhood memories was visiting my cousin who lived about thirty miles away. On the way home, we often stopped at the A&W Root Beer stand. It was one of those where a tin shelter provided shade, and a carhop came to take your order. She’d return a few minutes later with frosted mugs of root beer and my usual order, a bag of melt in your mouth, not in your hands, candy. I’d down the ice-cold root beer immediately, but the candy was always ice cold too, and not to my liking. I’d pop the candy bag in the back window of the car and let the sun warm it. Halfway home, I’d open the bag and pinch each warm, colorful candy drop between my thumb and forefinger, smashing it into a dark flower with a bright center. I’d savor each one like it was the most expensive of bon-bons, and the trip home in our sans-air-conditioning car went by quickly.

As a Girl Scout, I attended a cooking class put on by the local power company. It wasn’t much, just an hour or so where they taught us how to use the latest in modern kitchen appliances before allowing us to try our hand at preparing a simple snack. Those corn chips coated in melted chocolate chips are still one of my favorite treats!

More opportunities to came, and my experiences with chocolate grew. I began to experiment with more complex chocolate recipes, and found more sophisticated chocolates to appease my palate. Soon, I was entering my chocolate confections in local contests, and winning! My greatest triumph was when my Chocolate Mousse Cake won the dessert category and Best of Show in the Gourmet Day competition at the Southern California Exposition (aka The Del Mar Fair). It was a warm summer day in SoCal, and my four-year-old daughter accompanied me with a promise of letting her visit the midway. She’d been patient through the long day of judging and waiting. The winners were announced, and she was by my side as I accepted the big blue ribbon and engraved serving spoon prize. A reporter from the local newspaper asked to take my picture with my winning entry, and I obliged. As usual, my daughter was right next to me – I wasn’t about to let her out of my sight at the fairgrounds. Just as the photographer snapped the photo, my dear daughter stood on tiptoe and stuck her finger right in the middle of my prize winning Chocolate Mousse Cake!

We all had a good laugh as she licked her finger clean. The winning cake, complete with one perfect round hole, remained on display for the duration of the fair. At least someone besides the judges got to sample its perfection! I’ve included a downloadable copy of the prize-winning recipe on my website.

With this history of chocolate, it’s no wonder I’ve included a Midnight Chocolate Buffet as a part of every cruise aboard the Lothario, the oh-so-wicked cruise ship setting for FOUR OF HEARTS, and the three other books in the series.

BLURB:
Marriage hasn’t tamed Candace Callahan’s sexual curiosity, something her husband Ryan is grateful for, but when she asks him to tie her up for her anniversary present, he knows he’s going to need the help of their friends, Richard Wolfe and his wife, Fallon.
Dr. Fallon Enright is the resident sex therapist aboard the Lothario - the cruise ship co-owned by her husband and Ryan Callahan. When Ryan asks to participate in one of their couple’s rope bondage classes, Richard isn’t sure it’s a good idea, but Fallon assures him all will be well.
What begins as innocent curiosity, blossoms into a polyamorous relationship none of them could have expected, but they are powerless to ignore. When the tabloids expose their new lifestyle, the foursome must choose between the love they feel for each other, or accepting society’s moral constraints.

EXCERPT:
Ryan froze with his lips against the pulse in Candace’s neck. His erection surged with new vigor against her stomach. Why couldn’t his wife ask for something easy for their anniversary? Something like diamonds, a villa in France, hell, even an expedition to the North Pole. The image in his brain coalesced, and he knew he would give her whatever she wanted.
“You want me to tie you up?” he asked as soon as he found his voice.
“Don’t even try to tell me it doesn’t excite you.” Candace wiggled her soft mound against his cock. “I felt that.”
He had no intention of denying his interest. Only a fool would, and Ryan Callahan was no fool. He continued his exploration of his wife’s creamy soft skin, all the while forming and reforming the new image in his head. His lips left her neck, slipped to her shoulder where he tasted every inch of skin, before angling lower toward the perfect swell of her breasts. His hands held hers pinned flat on either side of her head. He’d tied her hands once, when he’d spirited her away from the Lothario and onto the Vixen, but that had been role-playing more than anything else. He was pretty sure she had something more in mind. He hoped to God she did.
Her request shouldn’t have been a surprise. She’d spent a lot of time lately talking to his best friend’s wife. Rope bondage was Fallon’s new research topic, and a passion shared with her husband Richard. Ryan inched his way lower, and teased one nipple to a marble hard peak with his tongue, before taking it in his mouth. Candace drew in a sharp breath and arched her back, encouraging him to suck harder. He obliged his wife.
His wife. The moniker still sent a thrill through his body every time he thought, or said the word. Candace Callahan. His wife. God, what a wondrous thing that was. For nearly a year, she’d been his constant companion, his lover, his…everything. Before he met Candace, he’d been lost and alone, searching for something he couldn’t name. Now it had a name. Love.
“Well?” Candace prodded on a gasp as Ryan switched breasts, sucking the poor, neglected one in his mouth without preamble.
Surely, she knew the answer. He couldn’t deny her anything. Still, he made her wait for his reply. It wasn’t as if he hadn’t given it any thought himself. There wasn’t much he hadn’t imagined doing with Candace.
He released her hands and slid lower until he lay pillowed between her thighs. He brushed his thumbs over the neatly trimmed auburn triangle that drew him like a compass needle to magnetic north. The scent of her arousal filled his nostrils and fueled a primal need. He swept his tongue through her juices. She ground her swollen flesh against his face, and he knew she’d forgotten everything but this. He dedicated himself to keeping the status quo for the foreseeable future.

Form a Circle Friday

Everyone awake this morning? I thought maybe you all would be snoozing from attending the midnight showing of Breaking Dawn. It was sold out in our theater and from my understanding all the shows are sold out for this weekend as well. I won't be seeing it for awhile which is ok, I have lots of reading to do and the holidays to prepare for. Speaking of the holidays,I was just filling my on line shopping cart with books for my nieces. Two of them can't even read but you can never start your Harry Potter collection too early and my other one is an avid reader that I mention in my blogs. She is the one that I pass all the good stuff to. I love to hear her say she loved what I gave her and is introducing it to her friends. In fact the book I'm gonna talk about today is one from the House of Night series that I gave her. She didn't read them for about a year because she was waaaay into Twilight but once she picked them up she was hooked. Here's to you ADD:)

Destined by P.C Cast and Kristin Cast

In Destined, the forces of Light and Dark collide as their epic struggle focuses on Tulsa’s House of Night. Zoey is home where she belongs, safe with her Guardian Warrior, Stark, by her side – and preparing to face off against Neferet. Kalona has released his hold on Rephaim, and, through Nyx’s gift of a human form, he and Stevie Rae are finally able to be together – if Rephaim can truly walk the path of the Goddess and stay free of his father’s shadow.

But is Zoey really safe? Does she truly know those who are closest to her? And will love win when it is tested by the very soul of Darkness?

Ok... the other bloggers know that this series drives me crazy. I picked up from Jenn so I blame her! I love the characters in this series. I called this blog "form a circle Friday" because Zoey and her friends form a circle when they call the elements to them. This is a story that has a main character and a strong set of "got your back at all cost" BFF's. The thing that drives me crazy about this series is that I don't feel the story progress with each installment. We don't seem to be heading for any kind of closure. But I will continue to read till the end! My favorite character is Aphrodite. She has some killer quotes. This installment also taught me a new word...awesomesauce LOL.

I give this book 3 chocolate dipped strawberries and a side of awesomesauce (sorry I had to use this word in a sentence. It was killing me not to!)
PEACE

Rough It Up

I am a big fan of shifter tales, mostly because they create an entire world in which to immerse myself. Books give me that release from reality so if they are too real, they aren’t for me. I follow a few shifter series – Lora Leigh’s BREEDS, of course and newer authors like Kiera West and Thea Harrison. My favorite are the wolves, lions and I do love me a bear shifter too. But anyway in between new releases in the series I follow, I began exploring and found Rough It Up by Emma Hillman. Not a part of a series (which is where I gravitate), this book still peaked my interest. And I am holding out hope that other books may come about.

In Rough It Up, the heroine Alexa has believed herself a “mixie”, a half-breed lioness, her whole life. Abandoning her pack, this tough woman has been on her own for a long time and is used to taking care of herself. With a family who never cared for her and feeling of isolation because she never truly belonged, Alexa keeps away from shifters and is seeking a life for herself within the human population. So when she meets Jay, an obvious shifter, and he immediately scents she’s in heat, she’s appalled that he offers his help (yep, that kind of help!). Even with her inner lioness pushing her to take him up on his offer – especially since he’s pure perfection, she shoots him down. Her grit and fortitude are refreshing in a world where authors so often like to create softer heroines.

Despite her declaration of not needing him, days later, Alexa realizes she needs his help after all. Thankfully Jay has given her his phone number and in desperation with the mating urge stronger than ever and her lioness clawing at her insides, she calls him to come save her. And comes, he does. It’s hysterical when even the hero in the romance novel becomes exhausted by sex – that never seems to happen?! When Jay arrives at her apartment, he can tell something is definitely wrong. Alexa isn’t acting with any of the decorum she’d surrounded herself with when they first met.

Confused, Jay calls upon his father, the pride's alpha, and his brother to find out what’s wrong with this woman he is now falling for. It’s a whirlwind of revelations towards the end that build an intriguing world I would like to learn more about. Hillman does a great job world building. Hopefully more shifters will get their stories told.

This book is a definite 4 Chocolate-dipped Strawberry read.

Humpday hellooooooo!

Howdy Humpday posse - we did it! Half way there! At the risk of sounding repetitive and wacky, I will point out it is nearly the full moon and work/life/whatnot is in the throes of full moon madness. I missed you all terribly last week - sick child, short staffing and complete exhaustion....the upside? I read non-stop while trying to save my sanity. So, I guess I am suffering the complete opposite problem of BFF Tyra - I have read too many things to recount but I'll try to give y'all a heads up about the best of the bunch! Just to sweeten the deal...how's about a little eye candy for forgiveness???? Mmmmmmm!!!

So this past week I revisted old favorite authors like Lynsay Sands, Jeannine Frost, Richelle Mead and Katie MacAlister, reveled in the new finds of Dakota Cassidy and stuck by the commitments made to PC and Kristen Cast. I ran the spectrum from young adult to paranormal romance with some serious and some hilarious and even finished the end of a beloved series. (Big snotty cry to that!)

1) Destined - Book 9, House of Night Series, P.C. and Kristen Cast, St. Martin's Press, October 2011.
Zoey is finally home where she belongs, safe with her Guardian Warrior, Stark, by her side, and preparing to face off against Neferet – which would be a whole lot easier if the High Counsel saw the ex-High Priestess for what she really is. Kalona has released his hold on Rephaim, and, through Nyx's gift of a human form, Rephaim and Stevie Rae are finally able to be together – if he can truly walk the path of the Goddess and stay free of his father's shadow…

But there are new forces at work at the House of Night. An influx of humans, including Lenobia’s handsome horse whisperer, threatens their precarious stability. And then there’s the mysterious Aurox, a jaw-droppingly gorgeous teen boy who is actually more – or possibly less – than human. Only Neferet knows he was created to be her greatest weapon. But Zoey can sense the part of his soul that remains human, the compassion that wars with his Dark calling. And there’s something strangely familiar about him…

Will Neferet’s true nature be revealed before she succeeds in silencing them all? And will Zoey be able to touch Aurox’s humanity in time to protect him – and everyone – from his own fate? Find out what’s destined in the next thrilling chapter of the House of Night series.

The House of Night series, for me, started out so fresh and exciting and really pushed YA Paranormal to a new edge. Sadly, the series took a shame spiral into teen drama-llama land and it was almost embarrassing to admit my secret obesession with Zoe the Ho and her many men. This installment was better than the past couple because it returned to some of it's roots - an ensemble cast of characters that are far stronger together than separate. Nevertheless, when tragedy strikes, these author's have no compunction about knocking off beloved characters much to the readers' dismay! I give 3 chocolate covered strawberries. But I did dig Aurox so I might throw in a half strawberry for him alone!

2) The Bite Before Christmas, Lynsay Sands and Jeanine Frost, Harper Collins, October 2011

The Gift by Lynsay Sands
Teddy Brunswick knows about the immortals among us. He’s worked with them, called them friend—but he never counted on being snowed in with one over Christmas. Katricia Argeneau is a tasty little bundle and she seems to feel the same way about him. Problem is, he’s not sure she feels quite the same way. After all, the snowstorm has derailed her blood delivery, which leaves him the only available meal on the menu. . . .

Home for the Holidays by Jeaniene Frost
Cat and Bones are looking forward to a normal holiday—at least as “normal” as it gets for the combustible vampire couple and their otherworldly friends and family. But their yuletide plans are shattered when a stranger shows up and reveals long-buried family secrets that threaten to take a bite out of their holiday cheer . . . and lives.

Argeneau's and Cat n Bones - can't really go wrong with this collaboration. Both stories were strong and enjoyable. Quick reads because they were novellas, both were like an appetizer sampler: little bits of your fav snacks to tide you over until the meal arrives. I give this anthology 5 chocolate dipped strawberries but must protest the wait for the Vlad spin off series and the next full length Argeneau/Rogue Hunter novel.

3) Honey, I Shrunk the Werewolf, Dakota Cassidy, Ellora's Cave, August 2011

“I’m a what?”“A werewolf.”“A werewolf who can’t remember he’s a werewolf because he has amnesia.”That pretty much sums it up. The timing couldn’t be worse, too. Just when the pain of booting her asshat of a husband to the curb has started to lessen, Ella gets stuck babysitting his hairy amnesiac ass. Well…she is a psychiatric nurse, after all. In exchange for helping Crosby rediscover his inner werewolf, Ella has the pack’s word she’ll be granted a divorce. She’ll be free to move on. Maybe continue the Twitter flirtation she’s got going with @Hairofthedog. Hey, it’s a start. But Crosby isn’t playing fair. No longer the Grand Poobah of Douchebaggery, with his memories gone, he’s more the charming, fun-loving man Ella fell in love with. How’s she supposed to hate him when he keeps smiling and charming and, oh yeah, screwing her six ways to Sunday? Though Ella’s body is game for more physical therapy, her mind hasn’t forgotten his betrayal. Crosby will need a damn fine excuse for what he’s done.As it turns out, he has one—and it’s a doozy.

Dakota Cassidy is every bit as funny in print as in real life. This woman is a scream - the crazy shit that comes out of her character's mouths actually comes out of hers as well (she was at AAD this year). I loved this story - fairly short, absolutely hilarious and sexy to boot! How can you not love that combination. Ella is a hot mess who just wants a Prince Charming. How can you not love her for that? Revenge sex sounds far more fun with some amnesia thrown in (rubs hands together and plots....hmmmmmmm). I give this short snort 5 chocolate dipped strawberries! Dakota earned an auto-buy status from this reader!

4) Much Ado about Vampires, Moravian Dark Ones book 9, Katie MacAlister, Penguin Publishing, October 2011

Corazon Ferreira is a jaded woman. Turns out she was a vampire's mate in a past life. And no matter how distractingly gorgeous he is, she just can't get the image of him killing someone out of her head. But when her life depends on him, Corazon's going to have to stop overthinking things-and start trusting her heart...

I admit it - I am a girl who loves a laugh with her smutty romance! Katie Mac has my number. Her Moravian Dark Ones are romantic, kooky adventures of the fangy sort and range from YA to all adult! It's nice to see characters return, it's like seeing family at holidays - a little comforting, a little exciting to catch up, thrilling to hear news. Her writing style and voice are genuinely enjoyable, humor flows like water and never feels forced - her heroines are the hot mess girl next door who's your BFF and you just love her. Her heroes are hotter than hell and love eternally, often against their better judgement. MacAlister knows how to make two wrongs very right! I give this installment 4 and a half chocolate dipped strawberries - only cause I was on a diet the day I read it and felt 5 was over indulgent!

5) Succubus Revealed, Georgia Kincaid book 6, Richelle Mead, Bantam Books, September 2011

Georgina Kincaid has had an eternity to figure out the opposite sex, but sometimes they still surprise her. Take Seth Mortensen. The man has risked his soul to become Georgina's boyfriend. Still, with Lucifer for a boss, Georgina can't just hang up her killer heels and settle down to domestic bliss. In fact, she's being forced to transfer operations...to Las Vegas. The City of Sin is a dream gig for a succubus, but Georgina's allies are suspicious. Why are the powers-that-be so eager to get her away from Seattle - and from Seth? Georgina is one of Hell's most valuable assets, but if there's any way out of the succubus business she plans to take it - no matter how much roadkill she leaves behind. She just hopes the casualties won't include the one man she's risking everything for...

I adore Richelle Mead's writing. Most well known for her YA Vampire Academy series, she also dabbles in the Urban Fantasy world with her amazing heroines Georgia Kincaid and Eugenie Thorn. Both series are excellent but my fav sassy bookselling succubus of Seattle Georgia and her nerdy author love Seth are in my top three romantic couples (Darcy and Lizzie, followed by Cat and Bones...what can I say? I a classic, paranormal hodgepodge mess!) The final installment in the series, Succubus Revealed, tortures the reader with more twists and turns in the ill fated love of Georgia and Seth. Without giving the end away, I will say that I was more than pleased with the ending but had to take a pause for a few sheets of TP when I ran out of tissues in the bedside box....yes, it was a happy cry! Definitely worthy of 5 chocolate dipped strawberries - this is one series that is worth the investment!

That's all from me this week - catch 'round the next humpday! Ciao for now!

No Book Blues

Ok Guilty Indulgence blog readers I need your help. I am in a funk. I have not read a book in almost two weeks!!! I have started several but I just can't seem to get into anything. I have even tried to go back and read some of my stand-bys...you know those books that you pick up to re-read just to feel like you are visiting old friends and NADA, ZIP, ZILCH!!! I can't seem to be able to read for more than a couple of pages and I put it down. Now this has happened before and I have been lucky enough to stumble across a series that I hadn't read and I start it and BAM I am off and running and reading three books a week again. So far this time that hasn't happened, but I do have hope because a couple of my auto buy authors have new books coming out in the next couple of weeks so I am hoping they can get me jump started. Has this ever happened to you?? Do you ever get in that awful funk of nothing catching your interest? If you have, what did you do to get out of it?

So since I haven't got anything new fto tell you about this week I thought I would share some of the books that are on my wish list that will be released soon.

Lawe's Justice, Lora Leigh, December 6, 2011
In Lora Leigh's scorching new Breed novel, two adversaries are destined to explore the only thing they have in common: an irresistible mating heat...
Diane Broen's lived to protect her younger sister Rachel from harm. But now that Rachel has been mated off, Diane's occupied herself with less fulfilling tasks at the Genetics Council--until she's paired with a new team member, a Breed male notorious for his attitude, and a touch that makes her recoil.
Lawe isn't thrilled with her either. A lion at heart, he prefers a lair of solitude. When it comes to females, he'd rather snarl than purr. And while fate may have paired them to fight on the same team, neither is willing to admit to the obvious: the mating heat between them is positively incinerating.
It's only when danger threatens that they make a hotter-than-hell connection--one so explosive it could destroy them. Or, as providence reveals, bind them together, forever.

I love the character's and the world that Lora Leigh has created and this is one breed who's story I have been waiting for.

Whisper's in the Dark, Maya Banks, January 3, 2012
Nathan is being held captive and is in agony. His saving grace is the voice of an angel who eases his pain and helps him regain enough strength to escape. When he does, she leaves him with a void that he can barely stand. When he escapes and returns to the KGI, he hears her again-now she needs him.
Her name is Shae, and she's on the run with her sister. A government group wants to harness their abilities to heal. The KGI wants to help- but can Nathan quiet his soulmate's doubts and convince her that they are meant to face these dangers together?

The Kelly family is back and I for one am so glad they are!

Eternal Captive, Laura Wright, February 7, 2012
Since feeding her his blood, Lucian Roman has struggled with his obsession with Bronwyn Kettler-fighting an uncontrollable desire to kill her, if he has to, and the vampire she has sworn to wed. But when a dangerous enemy threatens Bronwyn, only Lucian can save her life. Even if it means sacrificing his own...

I was so excited when I found this series, one of the most unique twists on the vampire mythology that I have read in a while.

Oracle's Moon, Thea Harrison, March 6. 2012
When Grace Andreas's sister, Petra, and her husband are both killed, Grace inherits the Power and responsibilities of the Oracle of Louisville, as well as her sister's two young children—neither of which she is prepared for. Then Khalil, Demonkind and Djinn Prince of House Marid, decides to make himself a part of the household both as guardian and counterpoint to Grace's impudence towards the Elder Races. .

This is by far my favorite new series and I hate that I have to wait until March for this book. LOL

By a Thread, Jennifer Estep, February 28, 2012
Gin Blanco never thought she’d need a vacation from being an assassin. But a few weeks ago, she killed Mab Monroe, her nemesis and the most powerful Fire elemental in Ashland. Now, all the city’s lowlifes are trying to make a name for themselves by taking out the Spider. So she heads south to a swanky beach town, along with her baby sister, Bria, for a weekend of fun in the sun. But when an old friend of Bria’s is threatened by a powerful vampire with deadly elemental magic, it looks like Gin will have to dig the silverstone knives out of her suitcase after all. But this time, her special powers might not be enough to prevent her from coming home in a pine box…

Gin Blanco is a KICK ASS heroine and I wanna be just like her when I grow up!

Ok Peeps, these are just a few of the books that I am looking forward too. I am sure there are several that I missed, but that is one of the good things about being friends with all of my favorite authors on Facebook, they always announce when their books are released AND they tell me when their friends have books that are released.
Hopefully by next week I will be out of my duldrums and have a hot and sexy new book to tell you all about!
