The Accidental Werewolf by Dakota Cassidy #REVIEW

The Accidental Werewolf, Dakota Cassidy, Berkley Trade
When Marty Andrews gets bitten by a mangy mutt while walking her teacup poodle, her blond hair darkens, the hair on her legs starts growing at an alarming rate, and her mood swings put her dream job as a sales rep for Bobbie-Sue Cosmetics in serious jeopardy.

Then a drool-worthy man shows up at her door claiming that he accidentally bit Marty. And since he's a werewolf, she is now, too. Thinking Keegan Flaherty is clearly insane, Marty refuses to believe a word until a kidnapping makes her realize there's more at stake than just her highlights. And she must put her out-of-control life in the hands of the man who makes her blood run wild in more ways than one...

Review:

When I received the email from book club saying we were going to rock it old school for our book this month and read The Accidental Werewolf by Dakota Cassidy I immediately jumped on the groupie bandwagon and picked up this book and I was not disappointed! What a fun read!

Marty is a Bobbie Sue cosmetic rep who is determined to be successful and has turned her enthusiasm of looking great into a career. Becoming a werewolf is not on her list. Sky blue convertible….yes. Werewolf…..definitely not!

She has recently recruited Nina and Wanda to help reach her goal of becoming a lavender. While the three of them are out walking Muffin, Marty’s teacup poodle one night Marty is bitten by a “dog”. And this is where the fun really begins.

Keegan aka gorgeous werewolf knocks on Marty’s door a few days later as she is wondering why her color wheel colors have suddenly changed and why she has to shave twice a day and needs an emergency hair color….could he have picked a worse day to drop by? He tells her he is the one who “accidentally” bit her and she is now a werewolf……well there goes my color wheel....a lot to handle for a vegan who can no longer wear the lavender she has been dreaming of and all of a sudden has a craving for red meat.

Unfortunately, being bitten by a werewolf is becoming the least of Marty’s problems. Someone wants her dead. As Keegan tries to talk Marty into trusting him to help with her transition to werewolf, he takes on the task of finding out who is behind the attacks on her.

This book has good secondary characters and a great combination of comedy, romance and suspense.

In Honor of Ms. Cassidy's birthday she has graciously agreed to give away an ARC of her next Accidental book, The Accidental Werewolf 2 : Something About Harry (Accidentally Friends #8)!!! So leave a comment for a chance to WIN!!!!

Farewell my love Friday

The Midnight Heir by Cassandra Clare

Magnus thought he would never return to London, but he is lured by a handsome offer from Tatiana Blackthorn, whose plans—involving her beautiful young ward—are far more sinister than Magnus even suspects. In London at the turn of the century, Magnus finds old friends, and meets a very surprising young man . . . the sixteen-year-old James Herondale.

This installment seemes quite short and not as light hearted as the others but a great read all the same. As always I learned a few things....They had a Hotdog Festival in Greenwich Village in 1903. Who knew!

If at anytime you jump into a body of water and yell "Ducks make me your king!" You have had too much to drink.

Last but not least this will be my new insult.....

Double #REVIEW of FireNine Series @shanorawilliams

Who He Is (FireNine #1) by Shanora Williams has a place on my New Adult favorites bookshelf.

Eliza Smith has never been the one to seek a relationship. She’s never dated a guy in her life, never even
hugged a man (outside of her father/manager of the hot and popular rock band, FireNine) but when she decides to spend her summer on tour with FireNine, it all changes. Eliza really gets to meet Gage Grendel - her former crush from high school and the lead singer of FireNine - and witness sides to him to which she’ll begin to truly despise.

She’ll ignore him, she’ll dislike his ways, she’ll do anything to try and stay away from him until Gage finally gets her to slip up and give in. She agrees on a casual fling with Gage, but soon they’ll both see how the fling will blur into something they can’t control and when it’s finally time for Eliza to go and accomplish her own dreams, she’ll know there’s more she took from Gage than she ever thought possible.

REVIEW
Who He Is has a place on my New Adult favorites bookshelf. It had that crazy emotional component that makes young adult characters realistic. Both main characters have their own back stories that create an interesting mix as they come together. Gage is a freakin' hot rock star who can have any woman he wants. Eliza is a quiet artist with not nearly as much experience as Gage. They couldn't be more different except that they both share less than perfect childhoods. Despite it all, they seem perfect for one another. Eliza and Gage move slowly from friends to lovers. There are so many ups and downs - I couldn't put it down because I had to know what would happen. In the course of their summer, Eliza and Gage grow and change as they fall in love. The character development is spot-on. The tension underlies everything, keeping it interesting, because looming over them is the fact that Eliza is returning to school in the fall. The ending left me gasping and desperate for the next book. S.Q. Williams created a story that will capture readers of the New Adult Romance genre.

RATING
5 Chocolate-Dipped Strawberries

Who We Are (FireNine #2) by Shanora Williams is the sequel to a fabulous book. If you read the first, you have to read this one too.

Eight months.

That’s how long it’s been since Eliza last saw Gage and they both feel as if they don’t deserve one another’s forgiveness. He screwed up. She walked away without looking back. They’ll try and make up all the time they’ve lost with one another, that is until they’re facing the choices of either going their separate ways, or hanging on and fighting for dear life.

The fights will be endless. They heartache will be real. The demons will return, and they won’t back down without a fight.

There are some who will do anything to keep true love apart, and those same people will dig deep into their demonic ways until Eliza and Gage are literally no more.

Can Eliza and Gage overcome it all? Will they be able to face the true demons that are seeking to destroy them? Or will they just forget about everything they’ve worked so hard for and go their separate ways?

Sometimes you have to go through struggles in order to reach an ultimate point of peace… but will their struggle be worth it?

REVIEW
The second book in the FireNine series just didn't measure up to the first book. I was totally bummed out because I wanted it to be great. It was good though - maybe my expectations were just too high. That said, the conclusion was satisfying and all my questions about the couple were answered. If you've read the first book, you have to read this one.

The characters changed during their time away from each other. Eliza matures and those who complained about her immaturity will no longer find that a problem. But Gage, the hot confident bad ass rocker, is now weak. I know he goes through a lot but he doesn't take charge of his life in this book. He goes along with being used for way too long to be believable. Where's his fight? I think the author was trying to portray how difficult his life had become but it came off as martyrdom to me.

But here's the real problem... the story skipped too much. Plotted out, this could've easily been two books with more depth to mirror the first book. Scenes were glazed over, the timeline had gaps and details to help readers connect were missing. I craved a deeper story after a full book on just a summer, this book far too quickly covered over two years.

#REVIEW: Deeper by Blue Ashcroft

Deeper by Blue Ashcroft is a touching story of two young people struggling through their losses.

BLURB
Rain Wilson isn’t ever going to love again.

It’s a promise she made the day her boyfriend died in a water park accident, one she still blames
herself for. Now she’s a senior lifeguard in a new town with a new pool and she’s just going to keep her head down and everyone safe.

Until a mysterious guy follows her into the waves at the pre-season bonfire and kisses her senseless. It’s just one mistake, and Rain is determined to put it behind her, until the dark haired, blue eyed hottie turns out to be her new co-supervisor Knight Mcallister.

Knight is hot, tatted, and carrying baggage of his own. He’s not happy about having Rain for a co-supervisor, and he’s even less happy about his attraction to her.

But between lifeguard drama, hot underwater kisses, and a growing attraction between them that can’t be stopped, Knight and Rain are being pulled deeper into their pasts, and realizing that sometimes too much broken can make a relationship impossible.

Then again sometimes it’s the broken parts of us that fit together best.

REVIEW
Deeper was a slow read but the story was just as the title suggests... it went deep. These two young people have lived with a blame that doesn't rest on either of their shoulders. It takes finding one another to hold onto for them to move on with their lives, to accept a happiness after profound loss. The author shows just how affected young adults are by the events that sometimes adults can more easily brush away with explanation. There are poignant moments that had me nodding. However, it took resolve to stay with it all the way through because it was a slow read and I enjoy a quicker paced, action-filled book. It got bogged down a bit on the details of being a lifeguard which might interest some - just not me so much. Readers will enjoy the relationship Knight and Rain build throughout the book, and will feel completed by the ending.

3 Years!!!!!

First I would like to thank everyone for helping us make it to 3 years! To all of our family and friends, authors, followers and publishers we wouldn't have made it this long without all of you!

So here we are, three years and over 600 books later(and that doesn't count my re-reads). I guess from that sentence alone you can guess my guiltiest indulgence. I don't remember a time in my life when I didn't love to get lost in the worlds that my favorite authors created.

Yes my biggest guilty indulgence is reading and there are probably some people that would say I spend too much time doing  it but that's what makes it an indulgence. But I have to say that with the invention of the e-reader and e-books my world was expanded even more. There are books that I have read that I wold have never found in my local B&N, there are authors that I never would have discovered without the smaller publishing houses and whole genre's that I would not have even realized existed if not for e-books. I am pretty sure that I couldn't survive without my Nook at this point. LOL

So, thanks All Romance Ebooks (ARE) for helping me discover authors like Cherise Sinclair, and GA Hauser and of course the late William Neal.

Thanks Samhain Publishing for the fabulous Dana Marie Bell and Bianca D'Arc and Shelly Laurenston.

I know my reading was enhanced by Loose Id for bringing me Cameron Dane and Amanda Young.

Dreamspinner Press is home to some of my favorite authors like Amy Lane and Mary Calmes.

And no one ever forget's their first, Ellora's Cave, who brought Lora Leigh and Christine Warren to my attention.

Thanks for all the wonderful reads and the laugh out loud moments and of course the smoking hot sex scenes!

Ok that's all from me, I am off to read!! ( what else would I be doing??)

The Blog-iversary Continues!!!!!

Hello everyone – oh but to think about my guilty indulgences. To me these are things that we love but want to hide from everyone. The thing that actually makes you feel guilty after you do part take. Today is a great day to think about it because I tend to do more naughty things on the weekend than any other time of the week. Maybe it’s just because I stay too busy during the week to give in. Or… maybe I just know that too many people are watching what I’m doing and that I seem to feel guilty about everything.

Come on you know what I mean. Like you are really busy and know that you should clean the bath room REALLY good because it’s just that dirty but I don’t feel like it so I take a Lysol wipe and just glance over the really obvious spots and run the blue Lysol stuff under the rim of the toilet and pretend that it really does sanitize everything if I let it sit for five minutes and flush!!! That really makes me feel guilty when I go back in and I CAN SEE all the spots that I missed and I swear it smells twice as bad now!! Not bad enough to make me want to stop and do a better job but enough to make me feel guilty. So… then I go in hunt of a Sixlet (it’s Halloween time so you know that they are out at the Dollar Store) or six L - I’m going downhill at this point because I will eat a handful. I just stick them in my pocket while I walk the dog. Yes – see – I’m walking the dog so the chocolate doesn’t really have any calories and I am actually burning calories. I tell myself that I didn’t clean the bathroom because I needed to walk the dog – knowing that I am sooo lying to myself and that I need the Sixlets because MAYBE I am having a sugar low and I don’t want to get dizzy on the walk because that would be horrible. I do say it enough that when I get home I think that I really am having a sugar low and you know the best thing for that is protein. I start to think about the best place to get the protein that I would enjoy J J - and we have all read enough books that talk about how to get that in a quick and enjoyable way. That makes me really smile and snaps me out of my funk until I realize that I don’t have a man to make that happen and just thinking about tall dark and handsome makes me wish it was closer to bed time so I could snuggle in and read about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So now I am really feeling guilty because I have other chores and it is only 8pm and I want to lock up the house and go to BED!!!!!!!!!!!! Arghhhhhh!

OK so now you know me too well. I am totally ruled by guilt, some that make me smile J and some that just nag the poo out of me. Sorry, didn’t mean to get off on a tangent but my mind seems to work in that direction. I love chocolate, food and books but by far my guiltiest indulgence is reading those books that my family and friends wouldn’t approve off. You know the ones you jump on this web page to read about. There is nothing wrong with wanting to read whatever you like and what makes you feel good. I just feel guilty because I don’t want to justify my reading choice to anyone. I love it all – from feel good simple romance to erotica – ménage – M/M or M/M ménage! Don’t judge me and I won’t judge you but I love to read it all. Sometime I do go to bed at 8:30 and read till midnight J or later and that my friend is my indulgence!

Have a great week – skip on cleaning the bathroom all together – jump ahead in a series – it’s all good! Live your life and have fun while you’re doing it!! Smile – Smile – Smile!

Rock On, Kylie Scott! #REVIEW of LICK @KylieScottbooks

Lick (Stage Dive #1) by Kylie Scott was Rock and Roll Romance done right. It's the Ultimate Indulgence even though Waking up in Vegas was never meant to be like this.
BLURB
Evelyn Thomas’s plans for celebrating her twenty-first birthday in Las Vegas were big. Huge. But she sure as hell never meant to wake up on the bathroom floor with a hangover to rival the black plague, a very attractive half-naked tattooed man, and a diamond on her finger large enough to scare King Kong. Now if she could just remember how it all happened.

One thing is for certain, being married to rock and roll’s favourite son is sure to be a wild ride.

REVIEW
Let me just say it - I LOVED THIS BOOK! This is how a book should be written... good characters, good story, good pacing. I devoured the book as quickly as humanly possible (sorry boys, no dinner tonight, mommy is reading!). Now that I got the gushing out of the way, let me tell you what I loved so much...

The characters were well developed and without stereotype. Their personalities were unique. While the typical romance is the woman falling for the man and him blowing her off, this book doesn't take the traditional route. David has been in the business for over ten years and he's only twenty-six. He's tired of the rock scene and craves something real. He thought he found that and then was destroyed when Evelyn doesn’t remember anything about him, their night together or even their marriage.
"Let me get this straight, you don't remember anything?"
"No," I said, swallowing hard. "What did we do last night?"
"We got fucking married." he growled.
My heart broke for the bad ass rocker right then and there. And its this scene that shapes every decision he makes in the book. Though he comes to Evelyn's rescue when she's overwhelmed by the media and assures her he'll give her a divorce, David also flaunts his groupies around her, blames her when his brother hits on her and then sets his lawyers on her. The author made his motives clear though and there was always this sense that he cared for her and was hurting.

Now, Evelyn doesn't mean to be cruel. She had been partying for her twenty-first birthday, allowing herself one no holds barred night but she's a light weight drinker. Still, she feels a twinge over the days that follow as she recalls tiny memories from that night. As they come back together, readers experience their chemistry which is both sweet and hot.

Everything happens at a good pace. Nothing feels rushed, overdone or unbelievable. The secondary characters are great and I can't wait to get to know them better. Malcolm was a good friend and his interactions with both David and Evelyn were genuine. One of the best lines of the book though is delivered by Evelyn's BFF. She's a big fan of David's band...
“Whatever happens, do not break up the band!”
It doesn't happen though. Evelyn brings inspiration and David finds his muse again. Now, the important part is that Kylie has her muse lined up to get this series written and delivered into the hands of fans like ME!

Haven't read this book? Love New Adult Romance? Love Rockers? Then... what are you waiting for??
CHECK IT OUT ON goodreads.

Guilty Indulgences, how do I love thee?  Let me count the ways:

1) I love my audio books.  Seriously love them. They are with me everywhere I go and I love that I can get immersed in the world of a good story even when I am driving, vacuuming or mowing the lawn.  Hearing a well crafted story with a talented voice artist takes reading to a whole other level. There are readers that I absolutely adore and because of them, have found new authors to listen to (now that's a switch, right? )  Loralei King reads the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum series as well as the Darynda Jones Charley Davidson books.  Love each of those authors but super love listening to them on audiobook.  Jim Dale who reads the Harry Potter series could read the phone book to me and I'd be in Heaven!  Lauren Fortgang reads the awesome Jennifer Estep Elemental Assassin series and Tara Sands does her YA Mythos Academy books.  I could be a long haul trucker just to stay in the car to listen!

2) While millions love the big house publishing authors and their stories, and I am no exception, I love love love some of the small house/indie/self pub authors I've chanced upon in the past year.  Resplendence Publishing has some extremely talented authors who write in lots of various romance sub-genres: Cheryl Dragon, Emma Hillman, Brynn Paulin, Sean Michael and Patricia Pellicane.  And Entangled can boast the likes of Gina Gordon, Caridad Pinero and Elle James.  Take the time to check out the webpages of these publishers and more (Evernight, Torquere, Riptide, Liquid Silver, and Secret Cravings) - you won't be sorry and you get a lot of book for your bucks.  Most can be found on Amazon or All Romance eBooks.

3) Young Adult.  It's true, I am one of the completely bizarre folks who loves YA innocence as much as hard core spanky erotic BDSM.  And have given myself whiplash going from one genre straight into another - I don't necessarily recommend flipping directly from the sweet "Love Me" to the intense "Do Me" but it works for me.  I am consumed with Jennifer Estep's Mythos Academy series, Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires and Jennifer Armentrout's Lux series.  They are all on the "drop-everything-the-latest-installment-is-out-today" list.  And let me tell you Darynda Jones' Death and the Girl Next Door series is hard on their heels.  I love the Scooby gang feel many of the more successful series have - it may take a village to raise a child but it takes a gang of adolescents to get through paranormal crises and save the world.!

4) Wine.  Red Wine. White Wine. Malbec. Merlot. Cab-Sav.  You name it - if the girls are together - let the good wines roll.

5) Chocolate. 'Nuff Said.

6) Dishy eye candy. Single girl/guy, Married girl/guy, Gay or Straight.  Anyone with a pulse- who doesn't appreciate the finely chiseled physique in all its yummy glory.  Mmmmmmmmm

7)  Shoes.  Even when you can't get into your jeans, pretty shoes fit.

8) Purses.  Same reason - I have a closet full of them and I don't have the heart to let them go.  They are all precious leather babies and have my eternal love.

What are your Guiltiest Indulgences?  Comment and share - we'd love to hear from you!

 Many thanks.

Take It Off with @cambriahebert #REVIEW

Torch (Take It Off #1) by Cambria Hebert just might set readers on fire.
If you can’t take the heat… stay away from the flame.

Katie Parks has been on her own since the age of fifteen. All she’s ever wanted is a place to call her own—a life that is wholly hers that no one can take away. She thought she finally had it, but with the strike of a single match, everything she worked so hard for is reduced to a pile of smoking ash. And she almost is too.

Now she’s being stalked by someone who’s decided it’s her time to die. The only thing standing in the path of her blazing death is sexy firefighter Holt Arkain.

Katie’s body might be safe with Holt… but her heart is another story.

As the danger heats up, sparks fly and the only thing Katie knows for sure is that her whole life is about to go up in flames.

REVIEW
Torch was a sweet love story between two people meant for one another. When Holt pulls Katie from the fire, there's this instant connection which leads him to caring for her when she gets out of the hospital. I enjoyed the fun banter and cute humor between these two characters. Their connection was sweet, tender - they were obviously two very nice, ordinary people. You don't get to read about those types of characters often so I enjoyed that.

But... the suspense subplot -someone trying to kill Katie- didn't feel authentic. Katie didn't seemed concerned enough. I mean, if I had been burning in a fire, you better believe I'd be freaked out. Where were the police? Shouldn't they offer protection? It felt as if this was the area of the book that could use more development. It would even bring the book from good to great if this story line has been fleshed out more. Arson, attempted hit and run, exploding cars and kidnapping should just be more suspenseful.

The love story in this book though is sweet. I adored how Holt took care of Katie since this poor woman couldn't catch a break. She needed someone and he was her someone. It just felt good.

Fifth Grave Past the Light by Darynda Jones

I am so excited to be going back to Lora Leigh's Raw event. After attending for the first five years I had to miss a couple of years so it will be nice to revisit with old friends and make some new ones! In honor of that event I bring you Darynda Jones who will be attending RAW this year and by the end will have a new best friend....ME!! LOL So when your ears pop this weekend or you know bleed from the high pitched squealing you will know that I am in the presence of the woman who brought us Reyes Alexander Farrow!!!

Fifth Grave Past the Light, Darynda Jones, St. Martin's Press
Charley Davidson # 5
Charley Davidson may not look like your everyday, run-of-the-mill grim reaper, but she has vowed to reap grimness wherever she goes despite this unfortunate fact. Sadly, she gets sidetracked when the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, moves in next door. As he is the main suspect in her arson case, she is determined to stay away from him until she can find out the truth. According to her therapist, however, she lacks conviction.

When dead women start appearing in her apartment - lost, confused and terrified beyond reason - Charley has no choice but to ask for Reyes's help, especially when it becomes apparent that her own sister Gemma is the serial killer's next target. With his ability to observe incorporeally, surely he can find out who's responsible. And even if he can't, he is the one man alive who could protect Gemma no matter who or what came at her. But he wants something in return: Charley. All of her - body and soul. And to keep her sister safe, it is a price she is willing to pay…

Review:
These books always make me laugh but I have to say that this one really brought a tear to my eye as well. And the ending....well lets just say CLIFF HANGER!

Charley is back and doing what she does best, solving crimes, drinking coffee and burning it up with Reyes! And Reyes is doing what he does best, which is to smolder and just be DAMN SEXY!

One of the things I love most about these books are the secondary characters and their interactions with Charley. I think if you are going to have a successful long running series you have to have a strong cast of secondary characters that people care about just as much as the main character. I for one am rooting for Cookie and Ubie, hoping Donovan and the Bandits come back, and am so glad that Rocket's home will be safe now. (Charley is going to have to bring a truckload of grape soda and  little umbrellas to make up for how she treated Rocket)

The world that Ms. Jones has created here is unique but at the same time very identifiable. The books have the right mix of humor, sex and mystery that keep me coming back again and again. I am always excited to see what object/body part we will learn the name for next. And I just have to say I want a shower like George...especially if it comes with it's own Reyes!

The next book Sixth Grave on the Edge comes out in May of 2014 and all I can say is where is a Time Lord when I need one!!!

RATING: 5 Chocolate-Dipped Strawberries.

Unbreak Me REVIEW

Unbreak Me by Lexi Ryan was a sweet and sexy love story. It'll break your heart and then make you smile.

“If you’re broken, I’ll fix you…”

I’m only twenty-one and already damaged goods. A slut. A failure. A disappointment to my picture-perfect
family as long as I can remember. I called off my wedding to William Bailey, the only man who thought I was worth fixing. A year later, he’s marrying my sister. Unless I ask him not to…

“If you shatter, I’ll find you…”

But now there’s Asher Logan, a broken man who sees the fractures in my façade and doesn’t want to fix me at all. Asher wants me to stop hiding, to stop pretending. Asher wants to break down my walls. But that means letting him see my ugly secrets and forgiving him for his.

With my past weighing down on me, do I want the man who holds me together or the man who gives me permission to break?

Unbreak Me is a poignant story of a young woman that went through things no girl should have to and she came out the other side whole. The mystery of her past is slowly revealed and left my mouth hanging open a few times.

Maggie has dealt herself a harsh punishment for the coping mechanisms she's used. She has no self confidence and can't see the value she brings to her family. In the beginning, I felt sorry for her which usually doesn't work for me. However, the author shares her secrets and builds her up as her relationship with Asher progresses.
“Someday," I say softly, "you'll tell me the whole story. I'll wait."
"When you know the whole story, you won't want me anymore. I'm that girl."
"Don't count on that."
When I lift my eyes to her face, she's watching me with something like wonder. "What?"
She shakes her head, "I can't figure you out."
"Good." I cup her face in my palms and trace her bottom lip with my thumb. "Then maybe you won't be able to figure out how to push me away.”
It's beautiful and heart-wrenching as Asher helps Maggie move forward after returning home. He knew how to help her heal without making her feel as if she's wrong to feel broken. The connection between Asher and Maggie is what made this book for me. (It even made me overlook some of the timeline questions I had.)

The metaphor with her glass artwork was a great inclusion in the book. Down to even these littlest details, the author gives readers a story they won't soon forget. In the end, it feels good to be reminded that everyone deserves redemption.

Fortunatly not a nun Friday

Another week closer to fall.......sigh:( Not that I dislike fall I actually don't mind it but when fall comes that means it's getting closer to that season that starts with a w. Time to enjoy what's left of the warm weather this weekend. Big cookout for mom's 60th birthday and the unveiling of my new ink. This time next week we will be on our way to RAW! While we will be art RAW having an awesome time you can pick this book up and have an awesome read......

The Hunter by Monica McCarty

Prized for his unbeatable tracking skills, Ewen “Hunter” Lamont accepts a dangerous assignment: locate a missing undercover courier. But this is no ordinary target. Ewen has met his prey before as “Sister Genna,” a fiery, forbidden woman forever etched in his memory after one stolen, sinful kiss. Now that he knows her real identity, he’s more determined than ever to keep her safe. But without the protection of the veil between them, fighting the allure of the beautiful lass may be the toughest battle this extraordinary warrior has ever faced.

After her ill-fated attempt three years ago to rescue her twin sister, Janet of Mar has found salvation acting as a royal messenger—until she surrenders to a darkly handsome warrior whose rough, sensual kisses stir feelings the woman in her can’t deny. But when betrayal leads to danger, and a crucial communiqué is put in jeopardy, Janet has no choice but to put her faith in the hunter who can find anything—perhaps even her heart.

Squeal and giggle! I love this series. Blew thru this book in three days. We chose this series way back in the day when the blog first started and I've been hooked ever since. Something about men in kilts makes me smile. I think my favorite thing about these books is that the women drive the men crazy and they can't take it no more and they cave like a house of cards.

I give this book 5 chocolate dipped strawberries and nice tote for Janet to carry her "nun attire" in.

Breaking Nova #REVIEW

Breaking Nova (Nova #1) by Jessica Sorensen is heart-breaking and heavy-hitting and not to be missed by New Adult readers.

Nova Reed used to have dreams-of becoming a famous drummer, of marrying her true love. But all of that was taken away in an instant. Now she's getting by as best she can, though sometimes that means doing things the old Nova would never do. Things that are slowly eating away at her spirit. Every day blends into the next . . . until she meets Quinton Carter. His intense, honey brown eyes instantly draw her in, and he looks just about as broken as she feels inside.

Quinton once got a second chance at life-but he doesn't want it. The tattoos on his chest are a constant reminder of what he's done, what he's lost. He's sworn to never allow happiness into his life . . . but then beautiful, sweet Nova makes him smile. He knows he's too damaged to get close to her, yet she's the only one who can make him feel alive again. Quinton will have to decide: does he deserve to start over? Or should he pay for his past forever?

REVIEW
This is not a traditional new adult romance where the romance takes center-stage. This feels more new adult drama with its themes of loss and discovery. Yet, it was so perfectly crafted that the path these characters were on had a sense of hope that's found in the romance genre. Thank goodness - or I never could've made it through such a tragic story. As a mother, I wanted to wrap these children up. It broke my heart to live their pain through the author's words. Jessica Sorensen had already proven herself a talented author but this time, she absolutely blew me away.

Readers are given the story of the summer when Nova meets Quinton. Both have gone through horrific events that have left them broken and we see the summer through their eyes. The characters are crafted so realistically. The issues are dealt with in a forthright manner with an integrity for the realities of suicide, drug use, sex, guilt, loss and tragedy. Nothing is glossed over. Readers are brought so fully into the story that it engulfs you. The book will own you - you won't want to put it down - and when you finish, you'll be going crazy waiting for the next book.

There's so much going on, it would've been unrealistic to find resolution in one book so the rest of the story comes in the second and third books. Readers will be satisfied with the character development and growth by the end, finding a happily-for-now ending to get them through until the next book.

WARNING: There's a lot of drug use in the book. If it offends you, you might want to skip the book but, to be honest, you'd be missing an amazing story.

PROLOGUE

Nova
Sometimes I wonder if there are some memories the mind doesn’t want to deal with and that if it really wants to, it can block out the images, shut down, numb the pain connected to what we saw—what we didn’t want to see. If we allow it to, the numbness can drown out everything, even the spark of life inside us. And eventually the person we once were is nothing but a vanishing memory.
I didn’t always use to think this way. I used to have hope. I used to believe in things. Like when my father told me if I wanted something bad enough that I could make it happen.
“No one else in the world can make things happen for you, Nova,” he’d said while we were lying on our backs on the hill in our backyard, staring up at the stars. I was six and happy and a little naïve, eating his words up like handfuls of sugar. “But if you want something bad enough and are willing to work hard at it, then anything’s possible.”
“Anything?” I’d said, turning my head toward him. “Even if I want to be a princess?”
He smiled, looking genuinely happy. “Even a princess.”
I grinned, looking up at the sky, thinking how wonderful it would be to wear a diamond tiara on my head and a sparkly pink dress and matching heels. I would spin around in circles and laugh as my dress spun with me. Never once did I think about what it truly meant to be a princess and how impossible it was for me to actually become one.
“Earth to Nova.” My boyfriend, Landon Evans, waves his hand in front of my face.
I blink my gaze away from the stars and angle my head sideways along the bottom of the grassy hill in his backyard, looking him in the eyes. “What’s up?”
He laughs at me, but his smile looks unnatural, like it doesn’t belong there. But that’s normal for Landon. He’s an artist, and he tells me that in order to portray pain in his portraits he has to carry it within him all the time. “You were totally spacing off on me there.” The front porch light is on, and the fluorescent glow makes his honey-brown eyes look like the charcoal he uses for his sketchings.
I roll on my side and tuck my hands underneath my head, so I can really look at him. “Sorry, I was just thinking.”
“You have that look on your face, like you’re thinking deep.” He rotates on his hip and props his elbow up on the ground, resting his head against his palm. Wisps of his inky-black hair fall into his eyes. “Want to talk about it?”
I shake my head. “No, I don’t really feel like talking.”
He offers me a trivial but genuine smile, and the sadness in my mind fleetingly dissolves. It’s one of the things that I love about Landon. He’s the only person on this planet who can make me smile—except for my dad, but he’s no longer alive anymore, so smiles are rare in my book.
Landon and I were best friends up until about six months ago, and maybe that’s why he can make me happy. We got to bond on a deeper level and understand each other before all the kissing and hormones came along. I know we’re only eighteen and haven’t even graduated high school yet, but sometimes, when I’m alone in my room, I can picture him and me together years ahead, in love, maybe getting married. It’s surprising because for a long time after my dad died, I couldn’t picture my future—I didn’t want to. But things change. People evolve. Move on. Grow as new people enter their lives.
“I saw the picture you drew for the art project,” I say, brushing some of the hair out of his eyes. “It was hanging up on Mr. Felmon’s wall.”
He frowns, which he always does whenever we’re talking about his art. “Yeah, it didn’t turn out how I planned.”
“It seemed like you were sad when you were drawing it,” I tell him, lowering my hand to my hip. “But all your drawings do.”
Any happiness in his expression withers as he rolls onto his back and pinpoints his attention to the star-cut sky. He’s silent for a while and I turn onto my back, letting him be, knowing that he’s stuck in his own head. Landon is one of the saddest people I’ve met, and it’s part of what drew me to him.
I was thirteen, and he’d just moved in across the street from me. He was sitting against the tree in his front his yard, scribbling in a sketchbook, when I first saw him and decided to go over and introduce myself. It was right after my dad had died, and I’d pretty much kept my distance from people. But with Landon, I don’t know, there was just something about him.
I’d crossed the street, very curious about what he was drawing. When I stopped in front of him, he glanced up at me, and I was taken aback by how much anguish was in his honey-brown eyes—the torture and internal suffering. I’d never seen so much of it in anyone my age before, and even though I didn’t know what was causing it, I guessed we were going to be friends. He looked how I felt inside, like I’d been broken apart and the pieces hadn’t healed correctly. Just like I guessed, we did become best friends—more than best friends, actually. We’re almost inseparable, addicted to each other, and I absolutely hate being away from him because I feel lost and misplaced in the world whenever he’s gone.
“Do you ever get the feeling that we’re all just lost?” Landon utters, jerking me away from my thoughts again. “Just roaming around the earth, waiting around to die.”
I bite on my lip, considering what he said as I find Cassiopeia in the sky. “Is that what you really think?”
“I’m not sure,” he answers, and I turn my head, analyzing his perfect profile. “I sometimes wonder, though, what the point of life is.” He stops, and it feels like he’s waiting for me to say something.
“I’m not sure.” I rack my brain for something else to add. But I can’t think of a single coherent, reasonable response to his dark thoughts on the meaning of life, so I add, “I love you.”
“I love you too, Nova,” he promises without looking at me, then he reaches across the grass and grabs my hand, twining his fingers through mine. “And I mean that, Nova, no matter what. I love you.”
We get lost in the stillness of the night while we watch the stars glimmer and fade. It’s peaceful but unsettling at the same time, because I can’t turn my thoughts off. I worry about him when he gets depressed like this. It’s like he goes into his own little world that’s carved of gloomy thoughts and a blackened future, and I can’t reach him no matter how hard I try.
We lie quietly, watching the stars and holding on to each other. Eventually, I drift to sleep with my face pressed against the cool grass, the spring breeze chilly against my skin, and Landon’s fingers soothingly stroking the inside of my wrist. When I wake up again, all the stars have blended in with the grayness of morning, the moon is tucked away in the glow of daybreak, and the grass is damp with dew. The first thing I notice is that Landon’s hand is missing from mine, and it makes me feel empty, like one of my arms has been detached from my body.
I sit up, rubbing my eyes then stretching my arms above my head as I glance around the backyard, searching for Landon. The only thing I can think of is that he got up to go to the bathroom, because he would never leave me sleeping on the hill alone in his backyard.
I push to my feet and brush the grass off the back of my legs before hiking up the hill toward his two-story house at the top of the backyard. It seems like a really long walk, because I’m tired—it’s too early in the morning to be up. When I reach the back porch, I take my phone from my pocket to text Landon and see what he’s doing. But I notice the back door is cracked, and I find myself walking inside, which is a little out of character for me. It’s not like I’m used to walking into his house without being let in. I always knock, even when he texts me and tells me to come straight up to his room.
But this time, something begs my feet to step over the threshold. It’s cold inside the kitchen, and I wonder how long the back door has been open. Shivering, I wrap my arms around myself and cross the entryway to the kitchen. Landon’s parents are asleep upstairs, so I make sure to walk quietly, heading downstairs to Landon’s room, which is in the basement. The stairs creak underneath my shoes, and I hold my breath the entire way down, not sure what will happen if his parents wake up and catch me sneaking down to his room.
“Landon,” I whisper as I walk toward his bedroom. It’s dark, except for the spark of the sunlight through the windows. “Are you down here?”
Silence is the only answer, and I almost turn around and go back upstairs. But then I hear the lyrics of an unknown song playing softly from somewhere in the house. I head for his bedroom door, and the music gets louder.
“Landon,” I say as I approach his closed door, my nerves bubbling inside me. I don’t know why I feel nervous. Or maybe I do. Maybe I’ve known for a long time, but I never wanted to accept it.
My hand trembles as I turn the knob. When I push the door open, every single word Landon’s ever said to me suddenly makes sense to me. As the powerful lyrics playing from the stereo wrap around me, so does an undying chill. My hand falls lifeless to my side and I stand in the doorway, unblinking. I keep wishing for what I’m seeing to go away, to disappear from my mind, to erase the memories. I wish and wish—will it to happen—telling myself that if I want it badly enough, it’ll happen. I start to count backward, focusing on the pattern and rhythm of the numbers, and after a few minutes, numbness swallows my heart. Just like I wanted, my surroundings fade and I can’t feel anything.
I fall to the floor, hitting it hard, but I can’t feel the pain.…

Quinton
I’m driving way too fast. I know that and I know I should slow down, but everyone’s complaining for me to hurry up and get them home. They’re worried we’re going to miss our curfew. Sometimes I wonder how I get myself into these kinds of messes. It’s not like it’s a big deal, but I’d probably be having a lot more fun if I was wasted with the rest of them, because it’s spring break and I should be having fun. I’m not a fan of being the designated driver, but I usually end up offering to be one, and now I’m stuck driving around a bunch of drunken idiots.
“Stop smoking in here.” I roll down the window as smoke begins to fill up the car. “My mom will smell it
from a mile away, and then she’s not going to let me drive her car anymore.”
“Oh come on, Quinton,” my girlfriend, Lexi, pouts as she takes a deep drag off her cigarette, then extends her arm out the open window. “We’ll air it out.”
Shaking my head, I reach over with my free hand and snatch the cigarette from her. “No more smoking.” I hold the cigarette out my cracked window until the cherry falls off, then release the rest out into the night. It’s late, the road we’re driving on is windy and curves around a lake, and we haven’t seen a car in ages. It’s good, though, since everyone else in the car is underage and drunk out of their minds.
Lexi sticks out her lip and crosses her arms over her chest, slumping back in her seat. “You’re so boring when you’re sober.”
I press back a grin. We’ve been dating for a couple of years now, and she’s the only girl I’ve ever been with and can ever see myself being with. I know it sounds superlame and cheesy because we’re only eighteen, but I’m seriously going to end up marrying her.
Still pouting, she slides her hand up my thigh until she reaches my cock, then she gives it a good rub. “Does that feel good? Because I’ll keep doing it if you just let me smoke.”
I try not to laugh at her, because she’s wasted and it’ll probably piss her off, but it’s funny how annoyed she’s getting by my soberness. “And you’re feisty and pouty when you’re drunk.” I squirm as she hits the right spot and fight not to shut my eyelids. “But I’m still not going to let you smoke in the car.”
She rolls her eyes, draws her hand away from me, and glances in the backseat, where my cousin Ryder is making out with some guy she met at the party. Their hands are all over each other. I’m not a fan of hanging out with her, but she comes out to Seattle sometimes and stays with my grandma. Lexi and Ryder became best friends during one of her visits when they were about twelve, and they’ve been inseparable ever since, which is pretty much how I met Lexi.
When Lexi looks away, her nose is scrunched. “So gross.”
I decelerate the car for a sharp corner in the road. “Oh, don’t pretend like you don’t wish it was you and me back there.” I wink at her and she rolls her eyes. “You know you do.”
She sighs and lets her arms fall to her lap. “Yeah, right. If we were back there and I was trying to stick my tongue down your throat, you’d totally be like”—she makes air quotes— “‘Lexi, please, there are people in the front seat who can see us.’”
“You’re making me sound like an old man.” I flash a playful grin at her as I downshift the car and the engine roars. The road is getting windier, and I have to slow down.
“You kind of are.”
“Bullshit. I’m fucking fun as hell.”
“No, you’re nice as hell, Quinton Carter. You’re seriously like the nicest guy I know, but the most fun? I’m not sure…” A conniving look crosses her face as she taps her finger against her lip. “How about we find out?” Without taking her eyes off me, she rolls the window down the rest of the way. The wind howls inside and blows her hair into her face.
“What the hell?” Ryder says from the backseat, jerking her lips away from the guy’s, and plucks strands of her hair out of her mouth. “Lexi, roll up the damn window. I’m eating my own hair here.”
“So Mr. Fucking Fun as Hell,” Lexi says, with her eyes on me as she arches her back and moves her head toward the window. “Let’s find out just how fun you are.”
I don’t like where she’s going with this. She’s too drunk, and even sober she’s always been a daredevil, impulsive and a little bit reckless. “Lexi, what are you doing? Get in here. I don’t want you to get hurt.”
A lazy smile spreads across her lips as she sticks her head farther out the window. The pale glow of the moon hits her chest and makes her skin look ghostly against the darkness. “I want to see just how fun you are, Quinton.” She extends her arms above her head as she slides up onto the windowsill. “I want to see how much you love me.”
“Quinton, make her stop,” Ryder says, scooting forward in the seat. “She’s going to hurt herself.”
“Lexi, stop it,” I warn, gripping onto the steering wheel with one hand and reaching for her with my other. “I love you and that’s why I need you to get down. Right now.”
She shakes her head. I can’t see her face or if she’s not holding onto anything. I have no idea what the hell she’s doing or thinking, and I’m pretty sure she doesn’t, either, and it’s fucking terrifying.
“If you’re so fun, then just let me be free,” she calls out. Her dress is blowing up over her legs and her feet are tucked down between the seat and the door.
Ryder lifts her leg to climb over into the front seat, but smacks her head on the roof and falls back. Shaking my head, I gently tap on the brakes as I lean over in the seat to grab Lexi. My fingers snag the bottom of Lexi’s dress and that’s when I hear the scream. Seconds later, the car is spinning out of control, and I don’t know what’s up or what’s down. Shards of glass fly everywhere and cut at my arms and face as I try to hold onto Lexi’s dress. But I feel the fabric leave my fingers as I’m jarred to the side. Everyone is screaming and crying as metal crunches and bends. I see bright lights, feel the warmth of blood as something slashes through my chest.
“Quinton…,” I hear someone whisper, but I can’t see who it is. I try to open my eyes, but it feels like they’re already open, yet all I see is darkness.
But maybe that’s better than seeing what’s actually there.…

Christine Feehan is back and better than ever!!!

Dark Lycan, Christine Feehan, Berkley

Yet just as surely, seduced into the silvery darkness of a full-moon night, they’ll also discover everything ancient and evil that exists to destroy them.

Review:
I am so happy to be back in the land of kick ass lifemates! I really thought I was going to have to give up on this series and it made me a little sad. This series is one of the first that really pulled me back into the paranormal world. I just really, really didn't like any of the De La Cruz brothers and the way they treated their lifemates. UGH!!

Tatijana and Fen were a great duo. While both fought their attraction to each other at first once it came down to it there was really no hesitation and they were a COUPLE. He didn't try to bundle her in cotton and hide her away, He recognized her abilities and they fought together.

This is the first in a trilogy inside the series as a whole, and I think all three of these books will center around the Lycan blood and the way that it blends and changes the Carpathians. The book was fast paced and this story brought new life to this long running series. The next book is one that all of the fans have been waiting for Dimitri and Skylar and while there isn't any info on the third book yet I have a feeling it might be the first time we see a Carpathian woman mate with a non-Carpathian male...which would be a HUGE twist!

It was great to see some of the characters from earlier books. Reading about Gregori with his twin girls was the best and I have to say this generation of Carpathians have some interesting talents. I would not at all be surprised if the series made a time jump and the next set of books centered around this younger generation.

If you were a fan of the series but kind of fell away I encourage you to pick up this book I think you will be pleasantly surprised and it may re-kindle you love for these books. I know it did mine!

Catch A Ghost REVIEW

Catch a Ghost (Hell or High Water #1) by S.E. Jakes is an intense story with volatile, alpha males that will leave your head spinning.

Everyone knows that Prophet—former Navy SEAL, former CIA spook, full-time pain in the ass—works alone and thinks only about the trouble he can cause. But his boss, Phil Butler of Extreme Escapes, LTD., has just assigned Proph not only a new partner but also a case haunted by ghosts from Proph’s past. Suddenly, he’s got to confront them both head on.

Tom Boudreaux—failed FBI agent, failed sheriff, full time believer in bad luck—is wondering why the head of a private contracting firm has hunted him down to offer him a job. Still he's determined to succeed this time, despite being partnered with Prophet, EE, LTD’s most successful, lethal, and annoying operative, and even though the case is also resurrecting his own painful past.

Together, Prophet and Tom must find a way to take down killers in the dangerous world of underground cage matches, while fighting their own dangerous attraction. And when they find themselves caught in the crossfire, these two loners are forced to trust each other and work together to escape their ghosts . . . or pay the price.

REVIEW
I've read S.E. Jakes before - Men of Honor series - and have always been swept away by the action and intensity. I knew right away that I had to read the first book in her new Hell or High Water series. Sure enough, it was fast-moving, heavy-hitting, and adrenaline-driven. What killed it for me was the ending that left me saying "What The Hell?"

I met Prophet as a secondary character in the Men of Honor series and was thrilled Jakes decided to give him his own series. He's, of course, hotter than hell but is also angry as hell. I couldn't wait to find out why but after finishing the book, I'm still scratching my head at that question.

When Prophet is assigned Tom as his partner, they immediately hate and want each other at the same time. Neither of them are happy about it so things are intense from the beginning. And the book is off and running with its intense action as the embark on their first mission. The chemistry is off the charts. The sex between them is freaking hot and intense. The physical attraction is undeniable but both have secrets from their pasts that keep them emotionally distant.

The secrets are also kept from the reader. It was a bit like those Bourne movies except I couldn't keep shaking my hubby to get him to explain something to me... lol! The subplots are engaging but they also confused me. Cillian, Tom's next mission and his sixth sense, John's story? I have more questions than I do answers and maybe... hmm... maybe that's what the author wanted. Well, if Jakes was going for the ultimate mind trip, it worked. I'll be grabbing the next book the moment it comes out because I NEED ANSWERS!! Lucky for us, we don’t have long to wait. Long Time Gone, book two, is set to be released in October.

Fashionable Friday

First week of school is over and everyone has survived. Back in the practice groove as well with a wonderful surprise to make any minor mishaps seem tolerable. If you haven't had the best of weeks you must grab this and read immediately!

The Runaway Queen by Cassandra Clare

While in France, immortal warlock Magnus Bane finds himself attempting to rescue the royal family from the horrors of the French Revolution—after being roped into this mess by a most attractive count. Naturally, the daring escape calls for invisible air balloons…

This was a quickie as I like to call them and it was fabulous! It seems that Magnus gets himself into trouble when he is "over beveraged" but don't we all. I also respect a man who has amazing fashion sense. My new favorite quote "If one could look this fabulous, one had an obligation to. One should wear everything, or should wear nothing at all".

4 chocoloate dipped strawberries and a bottle of wine because Magnus clearly does his best thinking when he's "over beveraged"

#REVIEW: Louder Than Love @jesstopper

Louder Than Love by Jessica Topper is Sweeter than Strawberries.

In this powerful debut novel, a young librarian grieves the loss of her husband...and discovers a love that defies classification.

It's been over three years since a train accident made a widow of Katrina Lewis, sending her and her young daughter Abbey back to the suburban town of her youth...the only place that still makes sense. Lauder Lake is the perfect place to hide and heal.

Recluse rocker Adrian "Digger" Graves survived the implosion of his music career, but his muse has long lain dormant. Until Kat hires him to play at her library—not on the basis of his hard rock credentials but rather, because of the obscure kids' TV jingle he wrote years ago. In a case of mistaken identity, Adrian stumbles into the lives of Kat and her comically lovable daughter.

Using tattoos as a timeline, Adrian unfurls his life for Kat. But as the courtship intensifies, it's unclear whose past looms larger: the widow's or the rocker's. Will their demons ever rest, or will they break these soul mates apart?

REVIEW
This was a powerful book. It dealt with that difficult subject of love after loss. The author's voice is raw, making the story difficult to read at times. It's certainly not a light-hearted romance, not conforming to the traditional romance formula. And certainly a love story that includes children has even that many more layers to it. The beginning was a slow start but in hindsight, that makes sense as Kat/ Tree gets through her sorrow. Readers needed the back story to make sense of her current relationship. It was a complicated story to tell.

This debut author rocked it. She brings readers a book with emotion -both joy and sadness- without either being overdone. The characters, including the secondary ones, are multi-dimensional and each have their own issues which added to the story. Readers will like these characters (I did.) and cheer them on to a HEA.

Stay With Me #Review

Stay With Me (With Me, book #1) by Elyssa Patrick gave me warm fuzzies and made me smile as I read.

BLURB
With one look, I’m his . . .

With one touch, he’s mine . . .

With one kiss, it changes everything between us . . .

I’ve been famous since I can remember. Singing, acting, dancing—I’ve done it all. The tabloids cover my every move, but I don’t want that anymore. I want to be normal, whatever that is.

When I leave Hollywood for college in Vermont, I’m on my own for the first time in my life. This is my chance to figure out who I am and what I want in life.

But it’s a lot harder than I expected. I can’t escape my image. Classes are difficult, and I’m struggling. And then there’s Caleb Fox.

Sexy, intriguing Caleb Fox.

Caleb is the one man who doesn’t want to use me. He breaks down my walls. He challenges me. He wants me. And I just don’t know if I can give him the same—or if he’ll stick around when he finds out my shameful secret that the tabloids haven’t managed to uncover.

Dating him is risky enough, but loving him could break me.

REVIEW
Stay With Me gave me warm fuzzies. Caleb & Hailey were wonderful and incredibly sweet together. Their relationship happened quickly but that's often the case in romance novels. The secondary characters were charming - all those roommates of Caleb were intriguing and his sisters were great. The backstory could've been fleshed out a bit more - seemed like Hailey adjusted a smidgen too easily with her only struggle being her grades. Wouldn't there be more distinction between this new life and the one she'd previously led?

Here's where the book fell apart for me... the editing/ proofreading. Or what about a beta reader for general feedback? There were info dumps and useless information randomly splattered throughout the story, slowing it down and seeming awkward. For example -and this is just one- why would we need so much description on what dress she brought to wear for Thanksgiving? Cut, cut, cut.

This was a sweet love story with very little tension. There was a secret revealed but it wasn't entirely unexpected and actually felt anti-climatic. Bringing in more depth with this issue *trying to be spoiler-free* would've created a deeper level of intimacy between Caleb & Hailey, along with providing readings with more substance. And, it might just be me, but I would've loved to see her kick her mother's ass with an exclusive interview of her own.

Anyway, for what it was -a sweet love story- Stay With Me made me smile. If you enjoy the New Adult genre, this is a nice read.
