The Beautiful Ashes by @Jeaniene_Frost #REVIEW

The Beautiful Ashes, Jeaniene Frost, Harlequin
Broken Destiny #1
In a world of shadows, anything is possible. Except escaping your fate.

Ever since she was a child, Ivy has been gripped by visions of strange realms just beyond her own. But when her sister goes missing, Ivy discovers the truth is far worse—her hallucinations are real, and her sister is trapped in a parallel realm. And the one person who believes her is the dangerously attractive guy who's bound by an ancient legacy to betray her.

Adrian might have turned his back on those who raised him, but that doesn't mean he can change his fate…no matter how strong a pull he feels toward Ivy. Together they search for the powerful relic that can save her sister, but Adrian knows what Ivy doesn't: that every step brings Ivy closer to the truth about her own destiny, and a war that could doom the world. Sooner or later, it will be Ivy on one side and Adrian on the other. And nothing but ashes in between…

REVIEW:
I was very excited to see that Jeaniene Frost has a new series coming out. I am a huge fan of Cat and Bones and was sure which ever direction she decided to take this series it was going to be good. Glad to see I was right.

Things have not been easy for Ivy. She lost her entire family in the space of a week, was attacked and then kidnapped. you know things aren't good when the best thing that happens to you is getting kidnapped. Ivy doesn't want to be attracted to Adrian, but there is just something about him that makes her want to know more. be careful what you wish for girl!

Adrian is your typical sexy, broody lots of secrets kind of guy. But he may be the only chance that Ivy has to find and rescue her sister from the demon realm.

I know a lot of the girls in the book club aren't real big on first books in a series, especially a paranormal series, but I like them. I like delving into a new world and finding out the rules and not really knowing just what kinds of places I will see or the creatures I will meet. This book introduces us to a lot of different creatures...some good and some bad and some we just aren't sure of yet. I hope we see more of Brutus. It is a very unique take on the heaven and hell/demons and angels story line then I have ever read before.

If you like your books fast paced and with lots of interesting characters and surprising twists, then pick up The Beautiful Ashes!

REVIEW:
Ivy has had a really bad week. Her sister is missing and her parents are killed in a car accident while looking for her. In her search for her sister Ivy finds herself thrown into the ultimate battle of good vs evil….prepared or not. Who knew that the visions she has had since childhood were of demons and according to her new friends, Adrian and Zach she learns she is the only hope to find a weapon able to destroy demons. And of course it’s lost in one of the demon realms….

What I liked about this book: *Great characters – hopefully to be detailed in later books. *Even archons can have a sense of humor. *Biblical story and references with a new twist.

Famous Face Friday

The Arrow by Monica McCarty

The talents of legendary marksman Gregor “Arrow” MacGregor are crucial now, as Bruce moves to reclaim his Scottish holdings. Gregor is considered the most handsome man in Scotland, and his fame as an archer is rivaled only by his reputation with the lasses as a heartbreaker. But when his infamous face is exposed during a covert mission, Gregor is forced to lay low. He returns home only to find a new battle waiting: a daring game of seduction involving his now very grown up and very desirable ward, Cate of Lochmaben.

A born fighter, Cate was clinging to life when Gregor rescued her after a vicious English raid on her village left her mother dead. But five years later, the once scrappy orphan Gregor took under his protection has become a woman. Brave, strong, and skilled in warfare, Cate is determined to lay claim to the warrior who refuses to be trapped. The heat in his eyes tells her she has his attention . . . and his desire. But will Gregor allow his heart to surrender before danger finds them, and the truth of Cate’s identity is revealed?

Have I ever told you how much I love love love this series??? The first book in this series was a book club choice several years ago and I've been hooked ever since. I like the historical part (it's not too heavy) and the dedication that the Highlanders have towards their King and to their family name. My favorite thing about this story is that Cate has secrets of her own. I also love how Cate can push all of Gregor's buttons and drive him mad. It's a skill she should be proud of! As for Gregor, I do feel for him. I can't say I would know what to do if I were in his situation. Guardian vs Lover??? It's a tough call.

Seeing as my children continue to remind me that it's fall and cold weather is nearing. Take this opportunity to start this series. It's awesome!

Humpday Hello Blogiversary style @MariCarr #REVIEW #CONTEST

Never Been Kissed

Two’s Company. Three is perfection.
Second Chances, book 5

Shelly MacIsaac has pretty much given up all hope. Hope that she’ll lose weight, that she’ll find any excitement in life, that there will ever be any man in her bed besides Barney, her cat.

When her friend Zoey suggests the wine girls come up with resolutions for the New Year, Shelly latches onto the one everyone expects her to choose—the tried-and-true commitment to go on a diet and get into shape. Deep inside, however, Shelly knows she needs to change a lot more than just her physical appearance.

After a year licking his wounds over a broken romance, Christian is through. He’s been quietly lusting after Shelly at work, and he’s not wasting any more time. There’s something about her that makes him believe she’s the one. Unfortunately, Shelly’s kickboxing instructor, Lance—Christian’s best friend—has set his sights on the sweet blonde as well.

Instead of pistols at dawn, the two friends come up with a deliciously erotic answer to their shared dilemma—if the shy beauty will accept their racy proposal.

Warning: There is a chance this story will encourage you to go on a diet and begin an intense exercise regime. After all, flavored body lube is low cal, right? And sex is a great way to burn calories.

REVIEW:

Mari Carr’s newest release Never Been Kissed wraps up her Second Chances series. For those who have cheered and swooned through all the "wine girls'" stories, this is the one you've waited for.  For anyone else who picks this up without reading the previous four - put the book down and go get Fix You first. No, this isn't the kind of book that needs the previous volumes to make sense, but it's impact will be even more meaningful if you have all five friends' tales.

Good romance stories have pretty standard elements - hero, heroine, trials and tribulations, happy ever after.  Great romance stories have storylines that stick with you after the eReader is off for the night, dialogue that makes you snicker and quip the following day, and a willingness to tackle those everyday subjects that really aren't very romantic but are really very real to most people.  The best romance stories involve characters that you wish really existed because you'd love to meet them and just hang out!

Never Been Kissed finally tells Shelly’s story. The baby of the group, Shelly has decided her weight is holding her back - from life and love. Her personal challenge is to get fit, get a life and get laid (for the first time).  To aid her journey, Shelly must tackle her lifelong self esteem and body issues.  Armed with a fitness trainer, a handsome co-worker and the "wine girls", how can she achieve anything less than success?  Who knew that Shelly would become the ultimate over-achiever?

As a curvy girl, I simultaneously craved and feared this story.  Shelly takes the reader to some pretty dark places during her struggle to find the good and the pretty inside.  It is hard to battle those voices and the message that Ms. Carr sends the reader is honest and realistic without being sappy or preachy.  Sure, everyone knows fitness and diet are the keys to healthy living - finding the inspiration and determination to follow through makes the story. And seriously, Christian and Lance the power to inspire and captivate... Holy cats! When Shelly breaks out of her shell, she goes for more than your average gusto when the two best friends decide she shouldn't have to chose between them!  Good things come to those who wait - and everyone deserves a Second Chance!!

RATING: 4 Chocolate-Dipped Strawberries.  Many thanks.

Underground: Special Teams by @seanmichael09 @torquere #REVIEW # TOUR #CONTEST

AUTHOR INTERVIEW:
Keeping it Fresh

First of all, thank you Indulgent Bloggers for having me today!

I was asked about longevity and keeping my stories fresh. Well, you see, my characters regularly pinch my ass. No? Not that kind of fresh? ;)

Seriously, though, I am going to blame the characters. They keep showing up and I keep writing their stories. In the end, for me, that’s what it boils down to.

I will say that there are days when I’m tired or cranky (or tired and cranky) and uninspired and I just don’t feel like writing. Or that while I’m writing, the work seems clunky and boring, lacking that spark. I keep slogging through, because I’m a writer and that’s what I do. I write every day whether I want to or not. And usually, it turns out that the uninspired and clunky feeling I had about the work was actually just me and it reads just fine when I go back over it on another day.

That missing spark doesn’t happen all that often, though, because in all honestly, I love what I do. Writing is in my bones and it’s what I do, it’s who I am. I think loving what you do, whether it’s a creative endeavor or a non-creative one, makes a ton of difference. That love shows in the finished product.

I think that is what contributes most to my longevity, to my keeping things new and fresh for myself (and hopefully my readers!), the fact that, while this is a job, it’s the best damn job on earth and I love doing it with a passion.

EXCERPT:
"Do you want me to observe only this evening?"

"For a few hours at least. Jack has vouched for you, but it's important to learn us, how we work."

Hunter nodded slowly. If these people were forcing men to be subs, making them stay, abusing them, he'd be very surprised. This level of care didn't come out of a place of abuse.

"Let's go downstairs. I'll introduce you around. Ben wants to shave his boy today, head to toe, and he wants an audience."

"Even eyebrows?" That was some hard core shit. And wouldn't that surprise people who thought BDSM was all about whips and chains?

"Everything. This isn't a punishment, but Pete is having serious issues with hiding from Ben."

"Ah, Ben sounds like a very wise man." Inventive, attentive, a good master.

Hunt already liked this group. If it turned out anyone was being held here against their will, if they weren't on the up and up, he was going to be extremely disappointed.

"They're both learning, but they're getting there."

"Are they a new couple?" Hunt asked, watching Dan move around the kitchen, triple checking everything.

Jack answered him. "Yeah, Ben has been waiting for Pete for years, but the connection is new."

"I look forward to seeing them together, then. Watching their scene."

"It should be intense, emotional. Pete is a fighter."

Hunt nodded, already affected, just by the conversation.

Daniel chuckled. "Pete used to be a surgeon, and he had a breakdown. Went to work on a construction crew before he started working from home."

"Those high pressure jobs often produce subs, don't they?" The best sub Hunt had ever had was a man who ran a fortune five hundred company.

"You know it. We have a number of subs that are desperate to break, to allow someone else in."

"I enjoy a challenge." Hunt had to remind himself he was here on the job, not to find someone.

Jack grinned. "Me, I'm looking for a sweet boy, a good bottom who likes a hard fuck but isn't pushing constantly."

Daniel's laughter filled the air. "In other words, you're not looking for a boy like Keif?"

"Fuck, no. No, Keif needs an owner, not a Dom."

Hunt's eyebrow went up. "Keif?"

"One of our unattached subs," Daniel said. "He's got the need to be hard-used, broken down. No one man can handle him, no offense Jack."

"None taken."

"Is he here tonight?" Hunter asked, intrigued despite himself.

"He's with our group every night he's not on call."

"Is that a yes?" Because he hadn't heard a yes.

"He is here -- plugged, bound, gagged, and, I would imagine well-sounded by now."

Jesus Christ. A bolt of pure desire went through Hunt.

Daniel grabbed a case of water. "Come on, guys. Let's go down."

"Can I take anything?" Hunt offered.

"Can you grab the fruit bowl? I find fruit to be hydrating, erotic, and less messy than chocolate."

"You got it." These guys were pros at this hosting a BDSM party thing and Hunt found himself once again hoping they were all on the up and up. He wanted to play, not to make arrests.

Following Dan downstairs, he felt his anticipation ramping up.

Instead of a dark, club-like atmosphere, downstairs there was a room with couches and lamps, pillows. It looked totally normal, at least until he saw the cage in one corner. The massage table. The man kneeling, wearing nothing but a collar.

Hunter took everything in, eyes moving over the men in the room, cataloging them. The man in the collar had to be Pete, the slender, whip-like man looking on proudly, Ben. There were a couple of men sitting together, a few wandering. In the back, bound and ring gagged, cock stuffed was...

Wait. Wait. Hunter knew that shock of near-white hair, the icy blue eyes. He saw that face every time the SWAT team was called out. Keifer Magnessen.

Underground: Special Teams, Sean Michael, Torquere Press
When Hunter Simms goes undercover at an underground BDSM party, the last thing he expects to see is SWAT’s leading shooter Keifer Magnessen bound, gagged, plugged and very bare. He is immediately drawn to Keifer, and wants to get to know his fellow cop better. Much better.

With such a high stress job, Keifer needs to give up control on his down time in order to decompress, but it’s a secret he holds close to his vest. So, when Hunter walks into his chosen place to submit, he tries to cut and run. Lucky for him, Hunter is shrewd, persistent and quite possibly just the Dom that Keifer needs.

Can these two strong men find a way to make their personal lives mesh?

REVIEW:
I have been a fan of Sean Michael ever since I picked up my first Jarhead novel back in 2008. I know going in that I am going to get strong characters with an interesting story and some of the best sex I have ever read.

Hunter is a Detective who goes to a home BDSM party to check out a lead that the subs are being abused. Being a Dom, as well as a Detective, he has a personal interest in this lead. While he is happy to find the accusations are unfounded he is even happier to find Keifer bound and needing a Dom to take him in hand.

Keifer is a sniper for the SWAT team and needs a Dom that can understand his need to be taken out of his head. He has yet to find a man or Dom strong enough to handle his attitude. When Hunter sees to his aftercare against Keifer wishes he realizes he may have just found the Dom he needs.

One of the things I have always liked about Michaels books is the insight that we get as to why someone needs to submit. With Keifer, the high stress level of his job as well as the ramifications of sometimes having to take a life, he needs to give up control somewhere in his life just to be able to decompress. His books always take the time to explain the aftercare and the satisfaction that a Dom gets in seeing to his sub.

I would love to see another book with these characters, to see where they end up and the further exploration of their Dom/sub relationship.

Pitch & Wet Paint by @WillParkinsonau @HarmonyInkPress

Pitch, Will Parkinson, Harmony Ink Press
Transitions #1
The day Jackson Kern walks into Taylor Andrews’s classroom is a momentous day in Taylor's life. He's had crushes before, sure, but as time goes on, this is starting to look a whole lot more serious. Still, Jackson doesn’t return Taylor’s feelings.

Taylor has his own admirers, though. Kevin Richards is used to getting what he wants, and what he wants right now is Taylor, so when Taylor rejects him, Kevin retaliates. At first Taylor’s entourage rallies around him, but then Kevin takes his deception one step further and Taylor sees his support dwindle, teaching him the valuable lesson about who he can truly consider a friend.

REVIEW:
Pitch is my first book by Will Parkinson and what a beautiful beginning.

Taylor is your typical high school student who is struggling with where they fit in. The day that Jackson walks into his homeroom Taylor knows he wants Jackson. But why would the popular, good looking, starting pitcher for the baseball team look twice at him?

Jackson is the new guy in school, which is something he is familiar with and is hoping baseball is his ticket to being accepted. After struggling with his mom leaving when he was young and moving from place to place as he grew up Jackson just wants a place where he can put down some roots.

In comes the bitchy cheerleader (no I do not have jealousy issues left over from high school LOL) and she basically messes up everything. Throw in a crazy stalker, and the most awesome best friend in the world and you have the makings for a truly engaging story. And that doesn't even take into consideration the incredible summer camp that Taylor and his best friend Ben are peer counselors at.

This is a story of friendship and loyalty and betrayal that is told without being preachy. It's told in a way that I think any YA can read and relate too. Situations arise that a kid of 16-17 would absolutely react to in the way that the author portrays. And you as the reader can see what's happening but have no way to stop it. You have positive adult representation which doesn't always happen in YA books but was great to read here.

Fabulous story with great characters!

Transitions #2
Although Addy’s heart and body bear the scars from his life before he was adopted by the Deans, he’s ached for something he thought he would never find. Until he met Benny. He isn’t sure how anyone can care for someone as broken as he is, even though he wants it desperately.

High school senior Benny Peters has his whole life planned out for him, until a chaste kiss at summer camp opens a new world of possibilities. Determined to erase Addy’s insecurities, Benny works to take away his boyfriend’s pain and replace it with love.

When Addy’s past intrudes on their future, it’s going to take everything Benny can muster to show that no matter what–or who–they face, they belong together.

REVIEW:
If you read Pitch then you know going in that this one is not going to be easy. If you haven't read pitch then stop right now and go do that....NOW!

Benny Peters is that teenager that every parent wants but few of us ever get. he is a true friend, loyal, super smart and an all around nice guy. When he falls in love you know it's going to be that EPIC kind of love.

Addy was broken. His story will tear you up and make you wish for for the most heinous death for an  imaginary characters(his father) ever written. He was broken but he is a survivor and that makes him stronger than he knows. But Ben knows....Ben SEE's Addy.

What an incredible story of survival and love. And while parts of it may have seemed a bit overly done, it so fit with the character that I was fully into the story.

All of the important characters are back from Pitch and we meet a new one that I hoping can find his way out of the darkness. these stories deal with some heavy issues but they are done in a caring realistic way. Not all hurt can be fixed over night and  the author does a wonderful job of showing that.

Another great addition to this series. I would recommend this series to anyone who likes a well told story!

Fresh Twist Friday

Never Coming Home by Paloma Beck

I have a story to tell, a story I promised never to tell. Hell, it isn't even one I wanted to live through. I just can't keep it inside anymore... now that they're both gone. I have to tell My Story.

Rachel Porter tells her sons about the love of her life, about their father and about their life together. This novella tells the story of the beginning of the Porter family through the Vietnam War, too many losses and a new beginning. It's a tale her sons won't forget, and one that could change them for all time.

This story made me think ( I know it scares me too). It's hard to describe without telling all but everyone assumes that once you marry you must have moved on from all other past loves. As you will see that's not always true. How does the other one feel about being the number two choice. This story had a twist that I don't think anyone is expecting. I found it fresh and interesting.

I give this book 4 chocolate dipped strawberries.
Can't wait for more!

Ignited #REVIEW @JulieKenner

ABOUT IGNITED

He promised to take me as far as I could go—and I wanted to go to the edge.

My whole life has been a cover, a con, a lie. I was born into the grift, raised on the thrill of playing someone I’m not. As a rule, I never let anyone get too close—until Cole August makes it impossible for me to stay away.

Cole is tough, sexy, and intensely loyal, yet his secrets are dark and his scars run deep. Not many women can handle his past, or the truth behind his fierce demands. But something about him beckons me—and our desire is a game I must play.

I know he’s dangerous, that even his touch is trouble, but what is passion without a little risk?
REVIEW
Very much like the other two books in the series, Ignited rounds out this trilogy about the three knights of Chicago and their new women. I'd been curious about Cole throughout the series because he seemed the most mysterious. Though he thought of himself as mostly bad, there's something Catalina brings out in him that completes the both of them. The story was well written with delicious sex, tender conversations and *bonus* cameo appearances from the Stark trilogy characters,

Read the entire series for the best experience.

TISSUES.....don't start this book without them!

This isn't a fairy tale story it's real. The emotions that this book brought out in me were visceral and messy...they were real. I loved that this look at how Robert and Rachel came together wasn't sugar-coated, it was honest and told with more emotion in 50 pages than some full length novels that I have read. The quote in the book from J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye, "Turn your scars into stars", was perfect for this story.

The Arrow by @monicamccarty @NetGalley #REVIEW #ULTIMATEINDULGENCE

The Arrow, Monica McCarty, Ballentine
Highland Guard #9

As King Robert the Bruce of Scotland plots to retake his English occupied castles, he needs the stealth and skill of his elite soldiers, the Highland Guard. Fearless and indomitable, no men are more loyal to their king, or cherished by the women they love.

REVIEW:
I can't believe we are already 9 books in to this fabulous series. I have yet to read one that wasn't beautifully written with not only the strong alpha heroes we expect but also strong women to stand beside them.

The way that Cate and Gregor meet she can't help but think of him as her hero. He literally plucks her from an abandon well and saves her life. Then for reason he can't quite understand he takes her on as his ward and takes her to his home in the highlands. The absolute adoration that Cate feels for him is genuine but Gregor doesn't think it's real.

Gregor has lived his whole life hearing how beautiful he is and for a while he uses it to his advantage but in reality he hates the reaction that women have to him. He has worked hard to prove himself and become the best archer in Scotland. What starts out as striving for respect from his father quickly becomes his drive for putting the man that he respects above all others, Robert Bruce, on the throne.

There are a lot of secrets on both sides in this book and you know that's never a good thing. I don't know that I could have forgiven Gregor for some of his mistakes and felt the hurt in my heart when he betrayed Cate.

This book is full of action, battles, romance and passion. It continues the saga of the Highland Guard and the men and women who are at the core of the war. Ms. McCarthy does a great job of blending the ugliness that is war with the romance and passion that make the war worth fighting. Even with the historical liberties that she takes her work always has an authentic feel to it.

I love this series and say BRING ON THE NEXT GUARD!

Not Fade Away by @authorSEJakes @RiptideBooks

Not Fade Away, S.E. Jakes, Riptide Publishing
Hell or High Water #3.5
Truth or dare.

Ever since superspy Cillian moved into Prophet’s building, their game of Steal the Couch has been funny to Prophet, but a thorn in Tom’s side. Then Prophet gets bored one night during an ice storm and insists on playing another simple game with Tom: Truth or Dare. In exchange for one of Prophet’s truths, Tom steals the couch one last time.

But Prophet’s truths are never easy—Tom should know that by now—and this one raises questions neither of them quite know how to answer. In response, Tom finds himself laying claim to Prophet in the most basic way he knows how. And also finds that he doesn’t mind it in the least when Prophet returns the favor.

REVIEW:
Sexiest game of Truth or Dare ever! This series is so intense that it's just nice to take a break and get a peek into the characters everyday, not life threatening, lives. This novella is a just a yummy break from the drama and gives us a deeper sense of the relationship between Prophet and Tommy. The trust and care that grows with each book is on prominent display. Sexy, fun quick read and one that will most definitely be read more than once.

Oh and remind me to call Tommy the next time I need a couch moved. (note to self buy couch just for Tommy to move)

RATING: 5 Chocolate-Dipped Strawberries.  This book was given to us by the author. Many thanks.

Unwritten #REVIEW @chel_c_cam

UnWritten by Chelsea M. Cameron
Children's librarian by day. Romance novelist by night.

British single father.
Someone else is writing this love story...

Blair Walton isn't your average curvaceous tattooed children's librarian. She's also one half of bestselling romance author, Scarlet Rose. Along with her BFF Raine, she spends her nights writing books so steamy, she's afraid they would shock her Southern conservative grandmother to death . . . if she knew about them. That's why she and Raine write in secret.

On deadline for their latest book and out of ideas, Raine suggests (demands) that Blair find a guy and "do some research". Declan Bennet has all the qualifications: He's British, looks fabulous in a suit, has glorious blue eyes and gets bonus points for being an amazing single dad to his adorable son, Drake. But what starts out as a research project quickly turns into something much more. And Blair's not the only one with secrets.

REVIEW
Unwritten was a fascinating story about the lives of two writers - Blair and Raine. These characters were completely authentic and unique. The author developed the relationship between the two friends who wrote together but missed some opportunities with Blair's boyfriend. Declan was a Brittish hotty that made Blair (and me) swoon. There was some flirty banter, some steamy scenes, and a sweet little boy but what was missing was drama, that pull that keeps you reading frantically into the night.

While not intense or compelling, the story was still nice and had a unique premise. I enjoyed the story, but not as much as her other books. If you're looking for a New Adult book that's more sweet than dramatic, this book is for you.

RATING
3 Chocolate-Dipped Strawberries

Mighty Casey by Willa Okati #REVIEW

Mighty Casey, Willa Okati, Loose Id
Novella: The only thing extroverted Nate loves more than baseball is his quiet, reserved Casey. The feeling's mutual, thanks--but it isn't all fun and games. A wedding planner, Casey's booked solid during the summer months and thanks to a certain poem about the Mudville Nine, cringes at the thought of ball games. Fair's fair--with seven older sisters who redefined “wedding drama”, Nate freezes at the thought of tying the knot. Casey might wish things were different, but he wouldn't trade Nate, his big heart, or his skills between the sheets for a wedding worthy of a Rockefeller.

After losing a strip poker bet, Casey's promised forfeit is spending a full day at a softball tournament. He's sure there's more going on than a simple sports wager and wonders what Nate's up to, but he's curious enough to jump in and commit. And so, finally, is Nate, who's planning a surprise involving an engagement ring and a proposal from the pitcher's mound.

But things don't go quite according to scheme for the odd couple when Nate takes his lover out to the ball game. And who knows what might happen when Casey's called up to bat?

REVIEW:
I love stories that are about established couples, I know the finding love stories are popular but I like the idea of lasting love. The two characters in this story are great and they blend well with each other. Not quite opposites attracting, but close.

The back and forth banter between them worked for me and I found myself smiling a lot. The authors play on major brand name items was particularly humorous. But as someone who has spent a tremendous amount of time at the ball field it was difficult to read everything revolving around that aspect of the story. It was all just so wrong.

The cast of secondary characters were fun and helped round out the story adding laughter and amusement. This is a fun quick read with a lot of interesting sexual encounters.

Mighty Casey: Home Run
Mighty Casey# 2
If opposites attract—and in this case, they do—then Casey and Nate fit like puzzle pieces. Though married for a year and still rocking the honeymoon lifestyle, Casey’s starting to feel like it’s time for the next big challenge.

Casey’s never been interested in having kids, but knows Nate would love a family of their own and would be a fantastic father. He thinks he’s ready to put aside past prejudices, but he knows it’s not the kind of decision you make on a whim. Nate only wants to have a family with Casey if Casey wants it just as much. Neither would accept anything less.

The annual Rule family reunion is the perfect time and place for Casey to take his hopes for a test drive and inform his choice. He’ll have plenty of chances to practice—with Nate’s ménage-a-parents and seven sisters, there’s a smorgasbord of family to observe and a half-dozen babies to test his limits.

(And a few games to play. This is Nate, after all!)

Is Casey ready to grant Nate his wish to become a dad and wind up the pitch for a proper “home” run?

REVIEW:
Casey and Nate are back and it's reunion time with the Rule family. Nate comes from a unique family structure in that he has two dads but what a loving environment to grow up in. He also has 7 sisters and is the only boy so you can imagine what that was like growing up.

They have come to that time in their relationship where the question to have children or not is being asked and while Nate would love to have a big family Casey isn't sure. What better time to test out your parenting skills than a family reunion with lots of little ones running around.

While the story was fun and entertaining there were a couple of things that seemed to happen for no reason and left me a bit perplexed and gave the story a disjointed feel.

RATING: 3 Chocolate-Dipped Strawberries each.  This book was given to us by Loose Id. Many thanks.

Excerpt

Joe had seen the wolf for the first time the previous night, a fleeting glimpse of glowing eyes as it tracked a coyote across the paddocks of Sapphire Ranch. He’d been convinced his eyes were deceiving him because he knew there were no wolves in Texas.

“You sure it was a wolf? Are you sure it wasn’t a coyote? What did he look like?” Like all ranchers, his daddy hated predators, but he was peculiarly tenderhearted about wolves. Joe didn’t have the same warm fuzzy feelings. For him, the only good predator was a dead one.

“Four paws, big ears, long fangs. What do you think it looked like?” At his father’s scowl, Joe quit the snark. “I hope I’m mistaken, because if not, the next time I meet it will be at the end of my shotgun.” His father looked upset and Joe cursed himself for mentioning it. “I’ll deal with it.”

“I hope you’re wrong,” his daddy said, shifting restlessly against his pillows. He winced, the lines deepening in his face.

PART EIGHT

The old crystal knob was nearly as solid as the door and Wolf’s Converses weren’t up to the challenge but he was going to give it his best effort. Angling his leg, Wolf brought his foot down on the latch and was rewarded with a small nearly imperceptible cracking sound. Matt buckled a bit when Wolf shifted his weight but he rolled his shoulders forward, and nodded for Wolf to continue.

“Dude, go again.” Matt widened his stance. “And shit, you’ve got some fucking long legs.”

Tristan came around the corner just as Wolf struck the knob again. This time the crystal sphere gave way, shattering under Wolf’s kick. The shockwave of hitting the solid mass twisted up Wolf’s thigh and he grimaced while rubbing at his knee. Lead crystal shards flashed through the air and spread over the hall floor, glinting a sharp promise for an unwary, unshod foot.

“We need to—” Matt stepped back, allowing Tristan to move in front of the door.

“Watch your feet, Tris.” Wolf cautioned. “Shit’s sharp.”

“I’m wearing socks,” Tristan said softly. “You know, I’ve got a skeleton key on my keychain for these knobs. We’ve got them all over the Grange.”

“Of course you do.” Straightening up, Wolf studied the latch. The silence from inside was nearly as loud as the crystal. “Can you get this open? Unless you’ve got some magic way in here, Thursday because I’m open to suggestions.”

“Here, let me undo the locking mechanism. These are exactly like the ones we’ve got home.” Tristan crouched and began to fumble with the odd gear-locking mechanism poking out of the heavy door. “Gidget’s calling for an ambulance. Just in case.”

“Hazel! Hazel if you can hear me, we’re coming in!” Wolf pounded at the door again.

“Not helping me here, Wolf,” Tristan warned. The latch gave way, vomiting up its innards and the door swung open on its oiled hinges. “Go.”

Hazel lay on the floor, her mouth flecked with drying foam. Her legs twitched, struggling against some unseen threat and her fingers kneaded at a knitted afghan, its fringed ends nearly knotted around one of her wrists. She keened, her eyes open and bulging, seemingly singing back at the ambulance’s siren cutting through the soft murmuring evening sounds coming from an open unscreened sash window.

Falling to his knees, Wolf cradled Hazel into the crook of his arm, sliding his finger into her mouth to check her airway for any obstructions. The older woman choked on the invasion, her tongue lashing about to shove Wolf’s fingers out of her mouth but he persisted until he knew she could breathe easily.

“What the hell happened in here?” Tristan collapsed onto the bed, its springs creaking.

Wolf sympathized with the helplessness in Tristan’s voice. There wasn’t much either of them could do and Hazel was unresponsive to anything Wolf tried to rouse her. Hazel gasped and wheezed in Wolf’s arms and he cursed the ambulance’s slow progress through the neighbourhood’s winding streets. It was torturous to hear it but unable to do anything but wait.

Something caught his lover’s attention and Tristan was off the bed before Wolf could respond. He crossed over to the open window, carefully stepping around something glittering on the floor.

“Oh god, Wolf. One of the panes is cracked” Tristan turned, his face pale and alarmed. “There’s glass all over the ground outside.”

“She broke the window?” Matt said from the doorway.

“Maybe, but I doubt it.” Wolf said as a pair of paramedics burst past him, pushing Matt into the room. He got up out of the way, pacing over to the window to pull Tristan back. The room’s pendant lamps were now blazing, giving the paramedics light to work by. It also spilled out of the window, illuminating the ground under the sill. “See if the cops are coming too, Matt. There’s footprints in the mud outside and there’s the screen. Someone was in here. With Hazel. And it sure as hell wasn’t for a quick cup of tea and a chat.”

Duck Duck Ghost by Rhys Ford
Hellsinger #2
Paranormal investigator Wolf Kincaid knows what his foot tastes like.

Mostly because he stuck it firmly in his mouth when his lover, Tristan Pryce, accidentally drugged him with a batch of psychotropic baklava. Needing to patch things up between them, Wolf drags Tristan to San Luis Obispo, hoping Tristan’s medium ability can help evict a troublesome spirit haunting an old farmhouse.

With Wolf’s sister handling Hoxne Grange’s spectral visitors, Tristan finds himself in the unique position of being able to leave home for the first time in forever, but Wolf’s roughshod treatment is the least of his worries. Tristan’s ad-hoc portal for passing spirits seems to be getting fewer and fewer guests, and despite his concern he’s broken his home, Tristan agrees to help Wolf’s cousin, Sey, kick her poltergeist to the proverbial curb.

San Luis Obispo brings its own bushel of troubles. Tristan’s ghost whispering skill is challenged not only by a terrorizing haunting but also by Wolf’s skeptical older cousin, Cin. Bookended by a pair of aggressive Kincaids, Tristan soon finds himself in a spectral battle that threatens not only his sanity but also his relationship with Wolf, the first man he’s ever loved.

REVIEW:
I was excited to be coming back to the Hellsinger world. I enjoyed the first book, and getting to know Wolf and Tristan and the unique cast of corporeal and non-corporeal beings in their lives.

This installment starts out with Wolf in the dog house and Tristan having a hard time connecting to the special visitors to the Grange. The strain is creating problems in their relationship so they decide to take a vacation. This is where they went wrong.

Wolf's cousin has a house in SLO (San Louis Obispo)and she is having a problem that Wolf hopes Tristan's talent can help with. So you throw together two people trying to find their way into a relationship, a gun toting Great Aunt, a sexy older cousin, family drama and one pissed off ghost and you have the makings for a frightfully good story.

One thing that I think this author does so well is write families, in all of their quirky messiness. Her secondary characters add so much to the overall story that is seems a put down to refer to them as secondary. I would love to be a fly on the wall at a Kincaid family reunion, because I am sure that would be EPIC!

While the family aspect may be funny and angsty, the poltergeist in this story scared the bejeeus out of me. This story hit all of my creep factor buttons and reaffirmed my dislike of porcelain dolls. All kinds of scary.

A great addition to the series and I can't wait to find out what the deal is with the stranger we meet at the end of the book and his connection to Wolf and the Kincaid family!
