Review

Detective Paige Whiskey doesn't get much of a break - on the heels of a major demon possession, housing the portal to hell within her body - she returns to Denver and hits the streets with her partner and a strange new murder.  Except that she is no longer alone - with her memories intact, her best friend Dexx in tow - and discovers a whole new world of paranormal creatures including vampires and shapeshifters.  Turns out you can blow the mind of a demon summoning witch!  This new and quite odd band of paranormals find a way to work together - to solve the murder and disappearance of multiple shifters from a nearby isolated community.  And yes, her demon nemesis Sven Seven Tails is still taunting her from both near and afar which adds a sinister element to the ongoing mystery that Paige and company are "hell bent" on solving.

The world building continues in book two - having thrown the protagonist and the reader the curve balls that shifters and vampires are actual creatures, and as far as new world building goes, SM Blooding gets better at informing while evolving.  The addition of elemental, animal and plant shifters being the key to safeguarding her demon door so she can continue to work and grow her gifts was very awesome.  The angsty moments that Paige has with her family and her fledgling romance with Dexx slow the flow in places but it is a definite improvement over the constant self loathing of book 1.

Kalinda Little delivers another solid job as narrator for this series. There are still some issues with inconsistent accents and Tony's voice conjures up images of a smarmy mob boss and not a dashing police detective, but there are some moments of pure comic relief that she conveys brilliantly.  I enjoyed the overall pace of the reading and felt that her characterization of Paige and the supporting cast was enticing enough to keep me in the car for a good while after returning from most outings. Overall this was the perfect October read - I can say it was time well spent driving through the autumnal countryside with the Whiskey Witches!

The Perks of Being An Author by S.M. Blooding

Really and truly, being an author is hard work. I get up at 6:30am and work until about 9-11pm with very few breaks. There’s so much to do! There’s writing and editing and covers and marketing and ads and formatting and websites and...that’s just your book. When you’re also working with other authors, then you get to do that with their books, too.

It’s a lot of long hours and sore muscles and eating like a college student--not because you can’t afford more, but because you don’t have time for anything else. Your house looks like a wreck and you just hope that no one actually wants to come by because you’re screwed. Your family constantly wants more time with you and your writing is constantly suffering because everyone needs more time than you do, and you’re constantly being guilt-tripped into doing other things because… it’s just writing.

But it’s amazing when your book touches someone. When your soul vomit reaches through the pages and touches and someone, talks to them, or teaches them something. When they see something they normally wouldn’t have. It’s beautiful and amazing.

And makes all the long hours, sore muscles, bad meals, and whining kids worth it.

The Hideaway by @Rosalind_Abel #REVIEW #ULTIMATEINDULGENCE

The Hideaway, Rosalind Abel
Lavender Shores #5
Lavender Shores’s resident tattoo artist, Connor Clark, looks the part—six foot six, musclebound, and covered in ink—and most definitely doesn’t blend in. Grafted into the Bryant family as a teenager to escape his abusive father, the Bryants saved his life, but Connor has never truly felt a part of the founding family royalty. And if his heart’s desire were revealed, it would betray everything the Bryants have done for him.

Micah Bryant was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He’s always had everything he ever wanted—save the one he desires most. Even moving to New York City for a few years didn’t dampen his passion. Not that Micah had expected it to. He’s known his destiny since he was nine years old, the moment it had walked through his door.

After years of longing, years of secrets and stolen moments of passion and love, Connor weakens enough to allow the town to see how he feels, and let the Bryants know his love for Micah is anything but brotherly. But no sooner had the decision been made than Connor’s biological family returns and shatters it all. Still, Micah holds on to the belief that their romance was written in the stars, but maybe he’d been wrong all those years….

REVIEW:
This series just gets better with each installment.

Connor came to the Bryants from an abusive, religious home. Living with the Bryants was the first time he felt loved and a part of a family. He suddenly had two sisters and two brothers and parents who accepted him unconditionally.

Micah loved Connor from the moment he stepped into their home. Raised as bothers Micah never looked at Connor that way, knowing that Connor was his soulmate. When Connor comes home from college, Micah desides to make his move and crawls in bed with Connor, only to have Connor reject him.

Thus a pattern begins, Micah is in from the beginning but Connor struggles with shame and fear that loving Micah will cause him to lose his family. The two go back and forth for years, and just when Micah finally believes that they will finally be together everything blows up.

My heart!!! This author is so good at creating these characters that just wreck me. Don't get me wrong, this isn't all angst, because there are some seriously hot scenes between the MC's. One that even had this girl thinking about getting a tattoo! But the internal struggle that Connor experiences is so real and visceral. Not to mention the family's reaction to the relationship....whooo talk about gut-wrenching.

I also want to give a shout out to the cover artist, AngstyG, because these covers are visually stunning!

If you love your stories with drama, heat, angst, love and family pick up this book now!

The Shipwreck by @rosalind_abel #REVIEW #ULTIMATEINDULGENCE

The Shipwreck, Rosalind Abel
Lavender Shores #4
Lamont Price’s romance novels have been a hit for the past few years. With his gorgeous looks, kind heart, and tender disposition, Lamont is the darling of Lavender Shores. He’s the guy everyone wants to be their best friend, the guy everyone wants to protect. But even with his success and the love of his family, Lamont feels hidden from those around him. Maybe the first step is attending a writing conference and revealing the man behind his pen name....

Tyler Dixon survives off his beauty and charm. From cover model to runway fashion to weekend arm candy, Tyler’s prices aren’t cheap. While his appearance is taking him places, his life as an artist has little more than flatlined. When an author hires him to appear as the face of her brand, Tyler thinks it’s just one more job. Little does he know another writer is going to steal all of his attention.

Escaping the conference to find some breathing room, Lamont runs into Tyler at a bar. Casual conversation leads to Lamont revealing his family’s obsession with helping him find love. It’s not a big deal to Tyler, who has played the role of boyfriend for other people in the past. Before either of them can rethink the situation, Tyler is in Lavender Shores meeting Lamont’s family. Though they’re only pretending to be in a relationship, the chemistry that ignites between them is anything but imaginary…

REVIEW:
This was my favorite of the series....so far! I am a huge fan of the fake relationship trope.

If ever a person needed someone to hug them and tell them they are good enough, it's Lamont Price. For someone to seem so very together and confidant he was consumed with inner demons. Lamont could have very easily become the "woe is me" character, but the author made him so real that you can't help but fall in love with him.

Tyler was such an interesting character, I don't know that I have read about someone in his profession who really had no guilt about what he did. It was very refreshing to read about a porn actor who was very comfortable doing his job.I was also a big fan of his family dynamic and can't wait to read about the Dixon, Kelly/Bryant clan getting together for holidays.

Speaking of the Kelly clan, Robert plays a bigger role in this book than the last few, but I seriously fell in love with Debbra. That ice cream scene was perfection!

The scenery is almost a third leading character in this story, more so than even the first book for me. I could almost see the photographs in my mind as I was reading about them. If only a place like Lavender Shores really existed....what a wonderful place it would be.

The Veranda by @rosalind_abel #REVIEW

The Veranda, Rosalind Abel
Lavender Shores #3
Donovan Carlisle helps countless people in Lavender Shores with his skills as a therapist. It seems, however, that his ability to enable others to live their happiest life only works outside of himself. Donovan truly loves his life, but isn’t able to find a relationship that satisfies his heart’s craving. Maybe the problem is that the only man he wants is off-limits.
Spencer Epstein came to Lavender Shores to find himself. Instead, he married one of the local town beauties. He’d thought his prayers had finally been answered. Then, he met his pregnant fiancĂ©e’s brother. It turned out those answered prayers were just cruel twists of fate.
A decade later, after a divorce and crumbling of all Spencer thought was set in stone, he sees his brother-in-law at a masquerade sex party. He takes full advantage of the anonymity and acts on the desires he’s held at bay all those years. The problem is, those silent and frenzied moments didn’t satiate anything. The fire and heat between the two men only grows as secrets are uncovered and they must determine if the cost of their passion is too high.

REVIEW:
So I will admit I was a little skeptical about this story. I really wanted Donovan to find someone and be happy, but I wasn't certain the author could pull it off with Spencer.

I was wrong. This is a beautiful second chance story with drama and scandal and sex and love.

Both characters are strong in their professional lives but when it comes to the personal side of things they have problems. Spencer's back story broke me heart and I was so happy for him to live his true self. The author does a fabulous job bringing the very tough decisions to life but anchoring them in enough reality it's not hard to believe the outcome.

The only time I screamed out loud was when I read about the Malbec being kept in the refrigerator....that was just so wrong!

Another winning addition to the Lavender Shores world.

Review

Detective Paige Whiskey brings new meaning to hunting down the "bad guys". As a homicide detective and legacy to the great Whiskey Witches, she knows more than your average cop about things that go bump in the night. Or so she thought. Brought to Louisiana for a murder investigation that sounds like her specialty (aka the weird and unexplainable), Paige finds herself investigating not only the murder of a local but herself as that crime scene unleashes years of repressed memories - of her powers, her family and her child who was taken away by her scheming mother. She cobbles together a band of helpers in the form of a Demon Hunter and her brother in law the ghost chaser, oh and her contentious grandmother the famous kitchen witch. Of course, when you are hunting a demon, it helps if you are a demon summoner...

As far as new world building goes, SM Blooding does a pretty decent job. There are several moments throughout the story when the same information gets repeated but that may be intentional as the protagonist, Paige Whiskey, is essentially on a journey of rediscovery at the same time the listener is following chronologically. I enjoyed the blending of the arcane, and the twist of demons versus angels and who is really the "bad guy". The discord in the Whiskey family was frustrating and a little angsty but not enough to dissuade the reader from continuing through the story. Readers will truly feel for the witch whose family turns on her out of mistrust for her gifts and powers. Sven the Seven Tails makes for a very creepy antagonist and the merry chase he leads Paige and her gang on makes for a thrilling ride. The action and adventure keep the book fairly well paced with on a few lag points. The budding romance between Paige and Dexx stops as soon as it can start to bloom as the first book ends but the promise of more lures the reader to follow up with book 2, Blood Moon Majick.

Kalinda Little does a solid job as narrator for this series. There are some issues with her inconsistent accent for Sven Seven Tails but he's a creepy demon - and apparently they all have British accents which is hilarious.
